5 movies about twisted mothers to watch after The Front Room
By Mads Lennon
Kathryn Hunter and Brandy star in the A24 psychological thriller film The Front Room about an estranged stepmother coming to live with her stepson and pregnant wife. Unfortunately for the couple, they soon discover that Solange (Hunter) is more than just a little handful. She's a genuine nightmare.
For those who saw or enjoyed The Front Room or are just looking for something different to watch this weekend, here are a few more horror movies featuring twisted tales of motherhood!
Ma (2019)
Similar to The Front Room, Ma isn't necessarily the strongest horror film, but a central performance by the titular antagonist makes it more compelling. Octavia Spencer became an instant icon (and meme) thanks to her performance in this twisted film about a grown woman exacting revenge on her high school bullies via their children. Don't make her drink alone!
Barbarian (2022)
There is one specific scene in The Front Room that will give Barbarian fans vivid flashbacks and probably make you recoil in disgust. It's a film that is better off not spoiled, if that's still possible nowadays, considering how popular the 2022 movie has become over the years.
The story revolves around a woman booking a rental property only to discover that someone else rented it before her and she winds up staying the night and sharing the place with him, which turns out to be a huge mistake, but perhaps not for the reasons you might expect.
Carrie (1976)
Margaret White remains one of the scariest and most abusive mothers in horror movie history. Perhaps if poor Carrie had been born to a mom who genuinely cared about her, she wouldn't have ended up on a bloody, murderous rampage of her high school class and anyone else who happened to stand in her way. There have been a couple of Carrie remakes, but nothing comes close to the 1976 original and the performances of Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek.
Mother! (2017)
Darren Aronofsky's Mother! is less about an evil mother and more about evil people doing horrific things to the "mother" in question. It's a very disturbing film with many layers to it that has one of Jennifer Lawrence's most underrated performances of her career. While Mother! proved to be polarizing, I happened to love it, and it's one of my favorites on this list.
Mommie Dearest (1981)
Mommie Dearest, a true cult classic with several memorable and very disturbing moments. It's one of the hallmark examples of the disturbed mother subgenre, starring Faye Dunaway as actress Joan Crawford. The movie itself is based on the autobiography of the same name by Joan's adopted daughter, Christina Crawford, who described her mother as a controlling and abusive woman.
