5 of the most disturbing monster movies
By Ricky Valero
We all remember that first movie that terrified us as kids. Mine was A Nightmare on Elm Street, specifically Freddy Krueger. I remember sitting by the steps as my parents watched the movie with my hands in front of my face, and I had nightmares for weeks after.
As we age, we appreciate horror movies as a collective much more. While things don't "scare" me like they once did, every so often, the memory of those early days reminds me of what it was like to remember those scarier times. Here are some of the most frightening monsters in horror.
Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Freddy Krueger haunted the nightmares of kids in and out of the movies. On the surface, Freddy wasn't the most handsome man, and once you factor in the claws and the fact that he haunts you in your sleep, it only makes him much more disturbing. No matter how you sliced it (see what I did there), Freddy Krueger was terrifying and belongs on this list.
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
Jeepers Creepers is one of the scariest horror movies ever made. This mind-bending, creepy mystery keeps you on the edge of your seat.
When it comes to "The Creeper," this is where things get terrifying for audiences, from his dominant presence to his movement, to the way he struck fear in his victims to the horrifying look on his face.
Alien (1979)
Ridley Scott's Alien is considered one of the greatest films ever made. Even forty years later, Scott's impressive visual effects in that era are still jaw-dropping. Personally, I didn't find the Xenomorphs all that scary, but when you scour the internet and social media, this was the number one answer amongst the most disturbing or scariest monsters in film history.
Jaws (1975)
Maybe the first controversial take I will include on the list is Jaws. This is the list of the scariest and most disturbing; because of that, the shark in Jaws 100% belongs.
Imagine sitting in the water at the beach when a 25-foot shark weighing 3 tons arrives to disrupt your vacation; that would be scary. Listed as an adventure, mystery, and thriller, Jaws should have horror listed under its IMDb page. Steven Spielberg knew what he was doing by creating this film, and it has scared people for generations to never step foot in the ocean.
IT (2019)
Pennywise is disturbing, scary, and one hell of a horror monster. Bill Skarsgård added an incredible depth to this role in his two films as the character that is, no matter how you look at it, scary as hell.
I remember coming out of the theater after seeing the movie, and someone had a red balloon tied to the bench, and this couple in front of me was SCARED. Whoever did that was brilliant because their plan worked. That's why Pennywise is on the list.
