A critically acclaimed horror film recently landed on Netflix, and it's already a hit
You won't believe what movie just recently got added to Netflix a couple of days ago. It's easily one of the best supernatural horror films ever made, and it's currently a hit on the streaming platform. We're talking about the critically acclaimed horror flick Evil Dead Rise. As of Sept. 25, it's currently sitting at the No. 6 spot on Netflix's top 10 movie list, making it one of the most popular movies at the moment. If you haven't watched this movie yet, what are you waiting for? Seriously!
Written and directed by Irish filmmaker Lee Cronin, Evil Dead Rise (2023) serves as a fresh take on the iconic Evil Dead franchise, and in our opinion, is a worthy addition to its legacy. It's the fifth movie in the film series, with the previous movies being The Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead II (1987), Army of Darkness (1993) and Evil Dead (2013).
While most of the movies in the franchise take place in a remote cabin in the woods, Evil Dead Rise offers a unique setting by shifting the story to an urban high-rise apartment where horror unfolds. We follow two estranged sisters, Beth and Ellie, who must fight for their lives as well as their families when a demonic force is unleashed and sets its sights on them.
The amazing cast is made up of Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, Nell Fisher, and many others. Sullivan portrays the role of Beth, a struggling musician who decides to visit her sister at her apartment complex, not knowing that shortly after her arrival, she'll find herself in a fight for survival.
On the other hand, Sullivan plays Ellie, Beth's sister, who is a tattoo artist and the mother of three kids. Those three kids are played by Davies, Echols, and Fisher. Truthfully, each actor in the cast delivers compelling performances, which makes the viewing experience even more enjoyable.
Like its predecessors, Evil Dead Rise is known for its graphic violence and intense horror elements. It's also a pretty gory film, featuring numerous scenes of brutal violence and bloodshed. It's definitely not a movie for the faint-hearted. But if you watched the previous Evil Dead films, you'd already know that this is the franchise's signature style.
Here's what some critics had to say about the horror flick via Rotten Tomatoes:
"Rip-roaring entertainment that captures the tone of the first two classics while finding new veins to messily drain. Evil Dead Rises is not quite so unambiguously comic as that early work, but Cronin never forgets we are here to have a bloody good time."
- Donald Clarke
"The gory-as-hell movie is as campy and fun as any chapter in producer Sam Raimi’s four-decade-old horror series."
- Johnny Oleksinski
"Evil Dead Rises marks a welcome return to the seamless blend of humor and genuine scares and creepiness that Raimi created 42 years ago."
- Andy Klein
