A Nightmare on Elm Street gets special 4K release ahead of 40th anniversary
By Mads Lennon
Freddy Krueger is the literal stuff of nightmares, an iconic and genre-defining slasher who carved his way through nine movies, a television show, and countless spinoff novels, comics, and more. Robert Englund originated the character in Wes Craven's classic 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street, which is coming up on its 40th anniversary this November. To mark this special occasion Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment is releasing the movie in 4K resolution with high dynamic range (HDR) for the first time!
The 4K UHD remaster of A Nightmare on Elm Street includes both the theatrical and the uncut version of the film (which includes an additional eight seconds of unrated content). Ultra HD with 4K resolution provides a wider color spectrum, allowing fans to experience the horror of nightmare master Freddy Krueger in all of his gory glory.
In addition to the 4K Ultra HD copy (which also includes a digital code), a limited edition steelbook is also being released on the same day that includes the 4K version, a Blu-ray copy, and a digital code.
The digital release and Ultra HD Blu-ray contain previous released special features:
- Audio commentary with writer/director Wes Craven, star Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger), actress Heather Langenkamp (Nancy Thompson), Ronee Blakley (Marge Thompson), producer Sara Risher, and producer Robert Shaye
- Audio commentary with Wes Craven, Heather Langenkamp, actor John Saxon (Lt. Thompson), and cinematographer Jacques Haitkin
- Alternate endings
- The House that Freddy Built: The Legacy of New Line Horror
- Never Sleep Again: A Nightmare on Elm Street
- Night Terrors: The Origins of Wes Craven's Nightmares
- Ready Freddy Focus Points
The physical 4K UHD copies debut on October 15, while the digital-only version comes out on October 1. You can purchase your physical copy online or in-store at major retailers. The digital version will be available through Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Fandango at Home, Google Play, and more.
A Nightmare on Elm Street is considered one of the most iconic and influential horror movies of all time. It spawned a massive franchise and catapulted Englund to legendary status along with giving us another famous slasher villain with Freddy Krueger.
Set in the Midwest, the 1984 film follows a group of teenagers being terrorized by Freddy, who preys on them in their nightmares and whatever he does to them while they're asleep, also happens in real life, meaning there is nowhere safe to hide.
