A24 has released the trailer for one of the most highly-anticipated horror movies of the year, MAXXXINE. MAXXXINE is the third installment of Ti West’s franchise, which began with X, released in March of 2022.

In X (which was written and directed by Ti West), a group of aspiring filmmakers rent a farmhouse in which to film their own pornographic movie. With dollar signs in their eyes, the group thinks they can follow the successful track of Debbie Does Dallas. However, they didn’t plan on the fact that a homicidal elderly woman lives on the property.

X was set in 1979, and had the gritty feel of horror films made in that era – think The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. In X, Mia Goth played two roles: Maxine, a young actress who wants to be a star and thinks this porn movie will get her there, and Pearl, the aforementioned murderous old woman.

Six months after the successful release of X, Pearl: An X-traordinary Origin Story was released. Rather than being a sequel, it was a prequel that told the bloody back story of Pearl, who was once again played by Mia Goth. Goth co-wrote the screenplay with Ti West, who once again directed.

Set in 1918, Pearl had a completely different look and feel than X (although it was just as bloody). It was filmed with a bright, rich color scheme, and Goth completely sold the character to audiences. Her final monologue (with that terrifying, intense smile) was definitely Oscar-worthy, but as usual, Hollywood ignored horror that year.

Goth returns to the role of Maxine in the third film, which is a sequel to X. The brief description of MAXXXINE released by A24 reads: “In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring acress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.”

MAXXXINE will release in theaters on July 5.

The new film stars Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Monaghan, Moses Sumney, Halsey, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito and Kevin Bacon. Ti West wrote and directed.
