Amy Adams is running with the wolves, well, dogs, in the upcoming Searchlight Pictures film Nightbitch. In it, she plays a stay-at-home mother—simply named "Mother"—struggling to stay afloat when her entire life revolves around her son, leading to a surreal and furry transformation.

Based on Rachel Yoder's critically acclaimed novel of the same name, Nightbitch was heralded for its themes of feminism and motherhood. As a story firmly entrenched in the magical realism genre, Nightbitch doesn't necessarily have an easy access point from the filmmaking perspective, but the addition of writer and director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) helped the pieces fall into place.

Speaking with Vanity Fair about the upcoming movie, which will be released in theaters this December, six-time Oscar nominee Adams recalled reading the novel and immediately working with her production company in partnership with Annapurna Pictures to adapt it into a feature. Even Yoder was shocked as she'd felt her book was too "internal" to adapt for the screen.

But once they got Heller on board, they started to figure out how to make the story work. The director describes Nightbitch as "a comedy for women, and a horror movie for men," though Vanity Fair writer Hillary Busis clarifies that the film expertly weaves all of those different notes together.

The crux of the movie is a woman who believes she's turning into a dog. She starts to notice fur growing on random parts of her body and other odd traits like a heightened sense of smell. All of it is established as a metaphor for motherhood and the experiences of the female body.

In addition to the in-depth profile piece released by the outlet, we also get our first look at Adams in Nightbitch, including a photograph of her running with several dogs, who have perhaps detected she might be one of them. Another image shows Adams as Mother standing in the yard staring up at the sky (moon?) while clad in nothing but a nightshirt.

At the source, you'll find four additional images, including one of Mother sitting at what appears to be a playground or a dog park as a few dogs approach her. Another shows her sitting at the kitchen table with her husband (Scoot McNairy) and son and one features Mother painting, hinting at the career she gave up to stay at home with her kid.

Nightbitch will be released theatrically on December 6.
