Sam Raimi's iconic horror franchise Evil Dead is still going strong after all this time. Most recently, fans were treated to last year's fantastically fun Evil Dead Rise, but there's still plenty more on the way, including at least two more live-action movies.

But franchise star Bruce Campbell, who originated the role of Ash in the 1981 film and has reprised the role many times since in different capacities, recently provided Entertainment Weekly with an update on the franchise's future, including confirming that the long-gestating animated series is still in the works.

While it's unlikely we'll see Campbell return as Ash in a significant live-action role, the actor did say he'd happily voice the character for an animated spinoff.

"We are developing an animated version, like a series. I'll do that. I'll do Ash's voice all day long, because my voice hasn't aged as much as I have."

What he told EW echoes his previous comments to Bloody Disgusting, who he spoke with in March 2023 ahead of Evil Dead Rise's theatrical debut. At the time, he said they were "actively pursuing" development for an animated version, though admitted it has been hard to work around Raimi's busy schedule.

Bruce Campbell says the future of Evil Dead 'is two more damn movies'

Apart from the animated project though, the future of Evil Dead looks bright. Two live-action films are currently in the works, one with Infested director Sébastien Vaniček and another by Francis Galluppi (The Last Stop in Yuma County). Plot details are being kept under wraps for both films.

Campbell mentioned that the movies have continuously made a profit, which is why the studio keeps funding new additions. "They're cheap, so they don't have to make that much—but now that they're making real money, it's kinda hard to look away."

Evil Dead has endured long past its beginning origins of being set in a lone cabin in the woods with Ash at the helm. It has proven it can take on new incarnations and develop different characters beyond that initial premise. Campbell thinks the trick is just to take the elements most important to the series, "which is innocent people being tortured by a malicious entity" and continue developing that in different ways.

Campbell will star in the upcoming Peacock satanic panic thriller Hysteria. Stay tuned to 1428 Elm for more updates on all things Evil Dead.
