Apple TV+ renews hit sci-fi thriller series Dark Matter for a second season
Sci-fi fans, we have some really good news to share that will make your day. Apple TV+ has renewed the hit science fiction series Dark Matter for a second season. Yes, you read that right. A Dark Matter season 2 is officially happening!
Here's what series creator Blake Crouch had to say about the show's renewal via an Apple TV+ press release:
"Thanks to everyone who tuned-in for season one—book fans and new fans—and of course our partners at Apple and Sony, my amazing producing partner, Matt Tolmach, our tremendous cast and crew, and the great city of Chicago—you were so good to us. In the process of writing and filming season one, we discovered that there’s so much more story to tell, and we’ve only scratched the surface of these characters as they fight for survival and to find their way home through a landscape of mind-bending realities. See you in the Box!"
- Blake Crouch
Head of programming for Apple TV+., Matt Cherniss, also expressed his excitement about working together again with Crouch and the rest of the show's creative team to make a Dark Matter season 2.
"The thought-provoking and gripping 'Dark Matter’ has quickly become a global hit, capturing audiences’ imaginations and making it a beloved and integral part of Apple’s world class sci-fi line up. We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Blake Crouch, our partners at Sony and the rest of the creative team and cast — led by the remarkable Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly — on a new season that will captivate viewers with more twists and turns as we dive deeper into the mysteries of the multiverse."
- Matt Cherniss
Like most TV shows nowadays, Dark Matter is based on another piece of work. It's based on the 2016 novel of the same name by New York Times bestselling author Blake Crouch. As mentioned above, Crouch also created the sci-fi series. The first season consists of nine episodes. It premiered with the first two episodes on the Apple TV+ streaming service on May 8, followed by one new episode released every Wednesday until the season finale on June 26.
Critics and viewers alike enjoyed the first season, with many people calling it one of the best TV shows of the year. In fact, Dark Matter currently has an 83% Tomatometer score and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. That's pretty impressive!
The show is set in Chicago. We follow physicist and family man Jason Dessen, who, while walking home one night from a friend's celebration at a bar, is held at gunpoint and abducted by a masked man. After being rendered unconscious, Jason wakes up to find himself in an alternate version of his life. With his family in danger in his actual reality, Jason must quickly find a way to get back to them to save them.
Golden Globe-nominated actor Joel Edgerton (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Loving, The Stranger) stars in the leading role of Jason Dessen, while Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Connelly (Snowpiercer, Top Gun: Maverick) plays his wife, Daniela Dessen. Joining them in the cast are Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley, and others.
