It is officially the first week of September, and all the pumpkin flavors are out in addition to plenty of fall-centric decor. So that means that the spooky season is underway! This week, the biggest titles are the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel and the Brandy-led A24 thriller The Front Room.
On the television side, it's a little less busy, but genre fans might be interested in checking out the Netflix murder mystery series The Perfect Couple, starring Nicole Kidman. Keep reading to get a total rundown of everything you can expect to see this week.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (Theaters, Sept. 6)
Set 36 years after the original 1988 dark fantasy film starring Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton, the gang is back for a new tale, and this time, they're joined by Scream and Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, who plays Lydia Deetz's daughter, Astrid.
As luck would have it, Astrid stumbles upon the small model town in the attic and accidentally re-opens the portal to the Afterlife, allowing Betelgeuse to return. In addition to the returning cast members, Tim Burton is also back as director, and so far, the movie is earning mostly positive reviews from critics. Regardless, it's sure to be a hit for the nostalgia factor alone.
The Front Room (Theaters, Sept. 6)
Max and Sam Eggers direct this latest project from A24. It stars Brandy in the lead role as a newly pregnant woman. She and her husband are thrust into a dangerous and terrifying situation when they're forced to take care of an estranged stepmother. Besides Brandy, the film stars Kathryn Hunter, Andrew Burnap, and Neal Huff.
Curse of the Sin Eater (VOD, Sept. 6)
If you're looking for a horror movie with a thought-provoking and twisted concept, then look no further than this one.
Curse of the Sin Eater is about a poor blue-collar worker who makes a deal with a billionaire mogul to inherit his property when he dies. The catch is that the worker must make a meal of the man's body, thereby inheriting all of his sins and wrongdoings. Indie filmmaker Justin Denton directs.
The Demon Disorder (Shudder, Sept. 6)
A new Australian horror film centering on demonic activity, The Demon Disorder follows a man supposedly possessed by his late father. Once his brothers realize something is amiss, they reunite to try and figure out what's happening.
Their reunion makes them realize that they're fully unprepared for the supernatural forces waiting for them and they might bring out all sorts of dark secrets the family would rather remain hidden. The Demon Disorder marks the directorial debut of special effects master Steven Boyle.
