6 best cave horror movies that'll keep you on edge
Cave horror movies are another subgenre of horror films that many people are drawn to. They are primarily set in caves or underground environments, which can make for a claustrophobic atmosphere. There's also the fear of the unknown due to the confined spaces being dark and having limited visibility.
For example, a group of characters in a movie could be exploring a cave, not knowing that a monstrous creature lives there because the darkness obscures what lies ahead on their path. This can create a sense of dread and suspense and can also make viewers feel a heightened sense of anxiety and tension. This is what these types of movies aim to do. They want to keep audiences on edge and provoke strong emotional responses out of them.
Overall, most people enjoy watching cave horror films because they seek the adrenaline rush that comes from being scared. If you're looking for some good cave horror movies to watch, make sure to keep on reading because we shared a list of six below.
As Above, So Below (2014)
Where to watch: Available to rent or buy on digital platforms
As Above, So Below is a horror movie that, instead of taking place in a cave, takes place in another underground environment. That underground environment is the dark, labyrinthine catacombs beneath Paris, where a determined archaeologist and her crew venture to in search of the legendary philosopher’s stone.
But as they navigate the dark and confined spaces, they begin to encounter both physical challenges and supernatural occurrences, as well as manifestations of their own fears and guilt. It then becomes a race against time for the team of explorers to survive. You can check out the official trailer above.
The Descent (2005)
Where to watch: Freevee, available to rent or buy on digital platforms
Honestly, The Descent is my favorite cave horror movie on this list. It centers around a group of friends who decide to embark on a spelunking adventure in the Appalachian Mountains. But what was supposed to be a fun activity turns into a complete nightmare when the friend group becomes trapped in the cave and encounters monstrous, blind humanoid creatures who make them their prey.
The Tunnel (2011)
Where to watch: Tubi, AMC+, Shudder
So, The Tunnel doesn't take place in a cave per se, but it is set in an underground environment. That's why I decided to add it to the list. It's a found-footage monster horror film that follows a group of journalists investigating an underground network of abandoned railway tunnels in Sydney, Australia. But as they delve deeper into the tunnels, they eventually find themselves trapped and encountering an aggressive, flesh-eating humanoid creature.
