Insidious might have had the shortest film retirement ever. Sony has set a release date for a sixth film in the franchise, August 29, 2025.

The news comes a little over a year after Blumhouse founder Jason Blum told Discussing Film that the fifth movie, Insidious: The Red Door, would be the last one "for a while." Adding that the franchise would go into a "very long rest," and potentially be revisited in ten years or so.

But to be fair to Blum, he did that interview before The Red Door made a killing at the box office, proving there is still fanfare for the popular horror franchise.

The Red Door, which marked star Patrick Wilson's directorial debut, outgrossed all four previous Insidious movies and became one of the highest-grossing horror movies of 2023, raking in over $189 million worldwide.

Sony did not reveal any plans for the sixth Insidious film, just the release date. It's hard to imagine that the next movie will follow the Lamberts again as the family resolves their storylines in The Red Door, with even Rose Byrne returning to help wrap up loose ends. But Insidious has departed from the Lamberts before, with the third and fourth movies focusing more on Lin Shaye's Elise Rainier and new characters.

Leigh Whannell and James Wan, who previously created the Saw franchise, worked together to start the Insidious saga back in 2010. The first movie is still considered one of the scariest modern horror films, introducing us to the Lambert family and their son, Dalton, who falls prey to an evil realm known as "The Further." As a whole, the Insidious franchise has grossed more than $730 million globally.

After the first film, the franchise followed up with Insidious: Chapter 2, Insidious: Chapter 3, Insidious: The Last Key, and, most recently, the 2023 film The Red Door. A spinoff film titled Thread: An Insidious Tale is also in the works, with Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani set to star.
