Charlize Theron in talks to star in upcoming Netflix thriller Apex

Academy and Golden Globe winner Charlize Theron is one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses, and it looks like she might've just set her next project. It's a Netflix thriller titled Apex. More on this upcoming film and Theron's potential casting below.

We first learned of this project back in February 2024, when it was announced that Netflix had acquired a female-driven genre thriller called Apex from writer Jeremy Robbins. Robbins is best known for previously writing for the short-lived horror anthology series The Purge.

Ian Bryce and Chernin Entertainment were announced to be producing the film, which was described as being a mix of the documentary film Free Solo and the psychological horror flick The Silence of the Lambs. The plot centers around a rock climber who finds herself having to fight for survival in the wild when a mysterious assailant begins hunting her down.

While no actors were initially attached to the film when it was announced, now it looks like Theron could be starring. According to Deadline, The Old Guard actress is in final talks to star in the upcoming Netflix thriller. In addition, the news outlet reports that Icelandic actor and theatre director Baltasar Kormákur is in final negotiations to helm the film from a screenplay written by Robbins.

Theron, Dawn Olmstead, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix will reportedly produce the movie through their yet-untitled media company, along with Kormákur via his RVK Studios. As reported by Deadline, the higher-ups at Netflix were so impressed with the Apex script that they bought it with just the producers attached. The news outlet also reported that Theron and Kormákur were the first choices of whom Netflix wanted as actor and director for the film.

Apex wouldn't be Theron's first Netflix project. She starred in the superhero film The Old Guard for the streamer, as well as the fantasy movie The School for Good and Evil. Next, she's set to reprise her role as Andy/Andromache of Scythia in The Old Guard 2 and as Cipher in the upcoming Fast XI.
