Christopher Nolan to direct future horror movie?
By Abby Moser
The internet was in a buzz this past week after Christopher Nolan announced he would like to direct a horror movie in the near future. Nolan is known for movies such as The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and recently Oppenheimer. Nolan has directed thrillers/mysteries in the past; for example Memento, which is about a man trying to track down his wife's killer. But what would it mean for the horror genre if Nolan stepped into the spotlight?
There is no denying Nolan's popularity, which is rightfully deserved after winning multiple awards throughout the years, including the recent BAFTA award for Oppenheimer. The popularity is only growing at this point and the internet is excited by the potential idea of a horror film by one of the best directors. Nolan made this huge announcement at London's British Film Institute after someone in the crowd asked him if he ever considered horror. "I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices, it really is about a visceral response to things and so, at some point, I’d love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea. And those are few and far between. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that. But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view. It’s also one of the few genres where the studios make a lot of these films and they’re films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have a lot qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting into films, but that’s a genre where it’s allowable.” Nolan stated. To direct a horror movie and to come up with a completely original idea is a great challenge, but one Nolan can step up too.
Nothing is confirmed but fans have high hopes for what Nolan can come up with. Horror movies in the past decade have been hit or miss and the genre could use a revamp. Everyone would be rushing to the theaters just to see what horror means to Christopher Nolan. I for one am looking forward to any potential announcements and the future of the horror movie genre.
