We're getting closer to The Substance's theatrical release, and you know what that means. The official trailer reveal! Today, Mubi dropped the intense, gripping trailer for the upcoming horror flick, and before you take a peek at it, just know that you'll be pleased with what you see.

The Substance is an upcoming body horror movie written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, the same talented French film director and screenwriter behind the action thriller movie Revenge. It was originally set to be distributed by Universal Pictures, but Mubi ended up acquiring the film ahead of its Cannes Debut.

This film sees the return of Emmy-nominated actress Demi Moore on the big screen. She hadn't starred in a new movie since the musical drama film Please Baby Please in 2022. However, fans were able to see her portray the role of Ann Woodward in the anthology series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans earlier this year.

Moore stars in the leading role of Elisabeth Sparkle, an aging movie star who is suddenly fired from her job by her sexist and ageist boss, Harvey. Down on her luck, Elisabeth comes across an unexpected opportunity to seemingly change her life for the better. How? By taking a mysterious drug called "The Substance," a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of yourself.

There's got to be a catch, though. Correct! She can only spend one week in her new body while spending the other week in her original body. If she follows this strict rule, everything should be fine, right? It doesn't seem so based on the thrilling trailer below.

Poor Things star Margaret Qualley plays the role of Sue, the best and younger version of Elisabeth. If you couldn't catch who Qualley portrays in the trailer, she's who Moore's character transforms into after taking the black-market drug. Joining Moore and Qualley in the cast are Dennis Quaid as Harvey, Hugo Diego Garcia, Phillip Schurer, Joseph Balderrama, and Robin Greer.

Based on the trailer above, we can already tell that this body horror flick will have you at the edge of your seat, and we can't wait to see it. Mubi is set to release The Substance in theaters nationwide on Sept. 20, 2024. Will you be checking it out?
