The character of Vampira was created in the 1950s by actress Maila Nurmi, who imbued her dark goddess of horror with camp and terror. Her Vampira character became one of her most successful, and she would even go on to host The Vampira Show, broadcasting vintage horror movies.
Despite the show only running for one season (50 episodes back then), it remains a cult classic, allowing Vampira to cement her legacy in the horror world. Post-The Vampira Show, Nurmi would play Vampira again in several films, most notably in Plan 9 from Outer Space, about aliens enacting their evil "Plan 9" with Vampira working as one of their minions. Fun fact: When Tim Burton later made his 1994 Ed Wood biopic, he cast Lisa Maria to play Maila Nurmi/Vampira.
