First look at Julia Garner in upcoming Rosemary's Baby prequel film Apartment 7A, premiering this fall
By Mads Lennon
Get ready to find out what happened to Terry Gionoffrio, the nice young woman and recovering addict who became friendly with Rosemary Woodhouse in the 1968 film Rosemary's Baby, based on Ira Levin's novel. Terry, played by Golden Globe winner Julia Garner, takes center stage in the upcoming Paramount+ original prequel film Apartment 7A.
Unlike the other Rosemary's Baby spinoffs and sequels, Apartment 7A won't try to mess with Rosemary's story or its aftermath and will instead expand on a side character from the original story. Terry tragically committed suicide by jumping from the Castevet's apartment. Or did she? The 1968 film implies that Minnie Castevet might have had something to do with Terry's death. Apartment 7A will shed light on what really happened.
What is the plot of Apartment 7A?
1428 Elm has learned that Apartment 7A follows Terry after she's taken in by an older couple, Minnie (Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest) and Roman Castevet (Pirates of the Caribbean star Kevin McNally). An ambitious dancer, Terry is invited to live with the Castevets in the infamous Bramford building while recuperating from a potentially career-ending injury.
During her stay with the couple, she meets a high-profile Broadway producer (Jim Sturgess) who offers to give her another opportunity. But Terry's time in apartment 7A is rife with disturbing incidents and strange happenings, leading her to question how much she's willing to sacrifice to achieve her dreams.
Apartment 7A is directed by Natalie Erika James (Relic) and based on a screen story by Skylar James. The screenplay is by Natalie, Skylar, and Christian White.
Apartment 7A will include other 'unexplored subjects' from the 1968 film
In addition to Paramount+ sharing first-look photos and the release date for Apartment 7A, Vanity Fair published an in-depth profile piece on the upcoming movie, revealing some additional insight into the film.
We've already mentioned characters like Terry and the Castevets being present in this movie, but we'll also meet other "unexplored subjects" from the first movie and Levin's book, like coven member Mrs. Gardenia, an unseen character from the 1968 movie. Tina Gray plays her in the Paramount+ film. Mrs. Gardenia was the former tenant of Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse's apartment who died before they moved into the building. She's mentioned only briefly at the beginning of Rosemary's Baby.
"For Mrs. Gardenia, [you’ll] be able to see her in action when she’s really just a footnote at the start of Rosemary’s Baby."
- James tells Vanity Fair
As Vanity Fair reminds us, Mrs. Gardenia wasn't shown on-screen, but Rosemary does find a note from her when they move in. In it, the woman expresses regret at being involved with the coven.
Check out the newly released photos for Apartment 7A.
It's worth noting that it looks like Apartment 7A will have its own version of that laundry room scene from Rosemary's Baby, except now we'll be seeing it with the added context of knowing Terry's side of the story. One of the above photos gives us a sneak peek of that scene with Amy Leeson as Rosemary.
Aparment 7A premieres in the US on Friday, September 27 on Paramount+. The film will come to additional international markets later this year.
