Major spoilers ahead for From season 3 episode 2
Episode 2 of From season 3 begins by following up on the horrific premiere ending that resulted in the death of Tian-Chen Liu. News of Tian-Chen's demise slowly spreads throughout town, leaving everyone reeling in the aftermath.
And the show doesn't waste any time forcing Kenny to confront the death of his last living parent. He and Jim wake up the following morning after their foray into the woods, having spent the night in the mysterious log cabins. They come back quite pleased, as they managed to find a lake and plenty of freshly grown crops. It looks like the town's starvation problems might soon be over.
Their joy is short-lived, however, as Kenny soon becomes aware of everyone's somber tone. Kenny is heartbroken over his mother's death. All he can think about is how whenever he remembers his father, he sees the bloody aftermath of what the monsters did to him. He doesn't want to be how he remembers his mother, so he asks Kristi to make her presentable before they bury her.
With Jade's assistance, Kristi prepares Tian-Chen's body, and the town assembles in the church for a ceremony in her honor.
Having lost two parents, Kenny goes off the deep end a little bit. Boyd catches him filling up multiple gallons of gasoline, intending to go into the tunnels and burn the monsters alive. Exterminate them all. Boyd offers to go with him, but before they venture into the darkness, he reveals the truth about what happened the night before.
Not wanting Kenny to think she died alone, Boyd is forced to tell him how the creatures forced him to watch her die. It's horrific and Kenny's reaction is just as distraught as you would expect. At the very least, though, Boyd is able to tell Kenny what his mother's final words were. In Cantonese, Tian-Chen asks Boyd to take care of Kenny. "He'll be all alone now."
Kenny breaks down, and Boyd convinces him to forgo the burn-out plan and return to town. But it does seem to inspire Boyd's next plan of action, as he later tells Ellis he'll need his help. He intends to catch one of those monsters so they can gather more information.
On the outside of town, we catch up with Tabitha, who has found herself at Victor's childhood home. Between when we last saw Tabitha and this episode, she apparently passed out in front of Victor's father, Henry Kavanaugh (Robert Joy). So he's been letting her sleep it off while keeping a gun carefully trained on her the entire time.
Henry wants to know where Tabitha got Victor's lunch box and why she has it at all, forcing her to explain the truth about where she came from and where her family remains. Henry doesn't believe her until Tabitha mentions seeing visions and trying to save children in a tower. That in combination with articles about herself and others still in Fromville makes him think she must be telling him the truth. And that would mean his son is still alive.
Accepting the truth, Henry takes Tabitha down into the basement, revealing tons of paintings created by his wife, and Victor's late mother, Miranda. It turns out that Miranda believed herself "chosen" and she would paint all the time, images of the mysterious town.
She called it a place no one could find on a map, that you could get trapped in from anywhere, and that no one escaped. Her paintings include her visions of the town diner, the lighthouse, and the strange children in white that Tabitha keeps seeing, indicating that now Tabitha is the chosen one. Henry thinks her mission is to "save the children," because Miranda was unable to do so.
Returning to town, this episode brings Ellis and Fatima back into the fold. We saw in the premiere episode that Fatima has been struggling with morning sickness. This episode establishes that it's worse than that. Something strange is happening to her body. She's unable to keep any food down and even loses a tooth. Unsure of what to do, Ellis takes her to see Kristi, who is busy with Tian-Chen. Reluctant as he is, Ellis allows Marielle to look after Fatima instead. She was a pediatric nurse, after all.
As expected, Marielle tells Fatima she's super malnourished, but that nothing going on with her is out of the ordinary. She offers her an elixir to take to settle her stomach. When the couple gets back to Colony House, Fatima suggests Ellis check on his father, leaving her to rest.
That's when she notices one of the residents packing up all the rotting crops to make compost. For whatever reason, the crops are incredibly appealing to Fatima and she grabs several of the rotten veggies to eat. Ew. Also not a good sign. Seems like whatever baby she's about to have is already being affected by this creepy town and probably not in a good way.
From season 3 episode 2 ends with a scene featuring Jim alone in the house when the phone rings for the first time. A mysterious voice on the other end says, "Dad? It's Thomas," as in Jim and Tabitha's dead son!
Odds & Ends
- The townsfolk are still very mistrustful of Sarah, but she seems to earn herself a few points back in this episode as she offers Kristi and Jade a dress for Tian-Chen to wear. She says they used to try them on in storage during slow days at the diner.
- Toward the end of the episode, Julie turns to Sarah for advice. To put it bluntly, her experience under the effect of the music box has changed her and she's scared of becoming like Sarah.
