Sliding into week three of Halloween Wars season 14, we're left with five teams competing: Shriek Squad, Death by Deco, Delectable Demons, 2 Ghouls and a Butcher, and Scream of the Crop.

In this episode, the five teams receive their toughest challenge yet, making a "Monster Trick or Treat" scene featuring scary monsters in disguise. But there's a twist! This week, the judges and host Jonathan Bennett introduce the "specialty spotlight," where each week, one person of each skill set (cake, sugar, or pumpkin) will need to create a specific element in the overall design.

First up is the pumpkin carvers. They have to make at least one character entirely out of pumpkin. One team even manages to add what Shinmin Li dubs the "most" pumpkin ever seen on a display in the history of Halloween Wars!

Here's what each team made:

  • SHRIEK SQUAD: A mummy princess on witchy lane with a zombie in the background; Tasting Element: Toffee almond tres leches cake with amaretto and almonds
  • DEATH BY DECO: Franklin's first treat with Medusa the princess nearby and made entirely out of pumpkin; Tasting Element: Chocolate bourbon nugget glazed in gourmet chocolate
  • SCREAM OF THE CROP: A murder (of crows) comes for Jack; Tasting Element: Milk chocolate bourbon ganache with pecan praline crunch and a brown butter pecan shell with an orange tuile cookie on top
  • 2 GHOULS AND A BUTCHER: A dragon named Drago visits Earth from another dimension; Tasting Element: Cherry-infused brownie with isomalt candy coating to look like a sucker
  • DELECTABLE DEMONS: Monster trying to steal all the candy from trick-or-treating lane, this is the one with a record amount of pumpkins on display; Tasting Element: White chocolate shell with a passionfruit marshmallow inside

The win went to Delectable Demons because of their spectacularly large monster with tons of pumpkins, in addition to all of the details present inside the monster's mouth, an effect created by utilizing pumpkin guts as gills.

Death by Deco & Shriek Squad land in the bottom two

Shriek Squad ends up in the bottom two for the second week in a row, this time because the judges weren't impressed with the paint job on their pumpkin mummy princess. Death by Deco lands there due to the Medusa princess looking a little too simplistic and the snakes too friendly.

In the end, the judges once again spare Shriek Squad, while Death by Deco is sent packing. Next week's episode will feature the teams creating scary monsters in love.
