Cuckoo starring Hunter Schafer is finally in theaters, and we're hearing positive things being said about Neon's new horror mystery film. It follows a teen girl who, after being forced to move in with her father at a resort in the German Alps, begins to experience strange occurrences and have weird visions. She soon discovers that the seemingly idyllic resort is not what it seems and that her life is in danger.

To kick off the list, we're going to start with the box-office hit and one of 2022's best horror films, Smile.

Smile (2022)

Smile has to be one of the most disturbing horror films I've ever watched. The story follows Rose, a therapist who, after witnessing the suicide of a patient, begins to experience increasingly disturbing events and hallucinations.

She eventually discovers the root of her problems, which is a curse that's been passed down to her. It was passed on to her from the patient she watched end their life. Whoever has the curse will be driven to madness, resulting in them committing suicide. Now, it's up to Rose to figure out the mystery of the curse and break it before she ends up dead next.

It Follows (2014)

Like Smile, It Follows centers around a curse that needs to be broken in order to save lives. When college student Jay Height sleeps with her boyfriend for the first time, she becomes the next victim of a curse where a supernatural entity will continue to follow her until it catches and kills her.

The curse is passed through sexual intercourse, and Jay becomes its next target after sleeping with her boyfriend, who was its previous victim. With the mysterious supernatural force hot on her tail, Jay must quickly find a way to escape it if she wants to survive.

Hereditary (2018)

Hereditary is a very intense and unsettling film, so it might not be for everyone. It follows a grieving family who become plagued with strange and horrifying occurrences after the death of the family matriarch. They soon discover that the disturbing events they're experiencing are connected to the matriarch and the terrifying secret about their ancestry she had been keeping hidden.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

The Killing of a Sacred Deer follows a successful cardiovascular surgeon and loving father who finds his life turned upside down when the teenage son of a former patient who died while under his care ingratiates himself into his life to seek retribution for his father's death.

Sinister (2012)

Known for its dark and chilling atmosphere, Sinister follows a struggling true-crime writer who finds his and his family's lives in grave danger after he discovers a box of mysterious home movies in his new home that depict footage of murders of previous families that lived there in the past.

Midsommar (2019)

Midsommar stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor as Dani and Christian, a young American couple who decide to travel to Sweden to attend a nine-day midsummer festival held by a remote, pagan commune in the countryside.

Things initially go smoothly once they are there, with the commune members being very welcoming. But as the festival progresses, Dani and Christian soon realize that the commune is not what it seems, as they are forced to partake in their sinister and violent traditions.

Barbarian (2022)

Another one of the best horror movies of 2022 would have to be Barbarian. If you're looking for something to watch that'll keep you on the edge of your seat, this is the movie to watch. It'll keep you constantly guessing with its twists and turns. After discovering that the Airbnb she reserved has a dark history, a young woman finds herself in a fight for survival when the sinister presence lurking within the house begins stalking her.
