Fans of the Shudder Original Series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs remember all too well the marathon that started it all. After years of laying low, the former host of The Movie Channel’s Joe Bob’s Drive-In Theater and TNT’s MonsterVision returned in 2018 with a 24-hour marathon on Shudder. It was originally intended to be a one-off, a chance for him to say goodbye.

The special was shown on Shudder TV’s live feed on July 13, and it featured iconic cult drive-in films such as Sleepaway Camp, Celebrity Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-A-Rama, Basket Case, Blood Feast and Pieces. In all, thirteen films were shown, and the marathon famously “broke the internet,” overloading the servers and causing viewers to be kicked out in the midst of watching.

After the huge success of the marathon, Shudder brought Joe Bob, Darcy the Mail Girl and the rest of The Last Drive-In crew back for a series, which is now in its sixth season. Now Shudder has announced an all-new special called The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon, which will close out season six of the series.

The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon will air Friday, August 30 at 9:00 p.m. ET on both Shudder TV and AMC+ TV. It will be available on demand on Sunday, September 1, where it can be watched on both streaming platforms. There is no word yet as to which movies will be shown (JB likes to keep it a secret, then release clues about a week out), but Shudder’s press release says “Joe Bob Briggs, Darcy the Mail Girl, and a few surprise guests are up all night to party”, so we do know there will be guests!

Past guests on Joe Bob’s series and specials have included Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Bobcat Goldthwait (Willow Creek), Kelli Maroney (Chopping Mall), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th), Barbara Crampton (Castle Freak) and horror movie host Svengoolie.

If you haven't watched The Last Drive-In yet, but want to, you can still catch the episodes on Shudder. Just be aware that not all of the films are still up since licensing agreements have expired for many of them.
