Horror icon and Halloween director John Carpenter wants everyone to know that there was never an alternate ending to Halloween (1978) featuring Michael Myers' death.

He took to X (formerly Twitter) on July 22 to say, in no uncertain terms, that the idea is "bullsh*t."

Carpenter doesn't @ any other accounts or say who he is referring to, but on the evening of July 21, a popular horror account, @horrormuseum, on the social media website tweeted that there is "an entirely different version" of the movie "that has never been seen."

Their tweet goes on to say they have "a friend who worked on the Blu-ray restoration" who supposedly told them about this alleged alternate cut with "95% different footage" and an "original ending where Michael dies."

Given the timing of the two posts, we can assume that Carpenter is responding to @horrormuseum's claim, though that's not officially confirmed.

That said, this isn't the first time rumors have alleged that there are additional cuts of Halloween, though I don't know that I've heard of a version where Myers died before so it's unclear where this particular rumor originated beyond that X account.

In the 1978 movie, Dr. Loomis puts an end to Michael's reign of terror (briefly) by shooting him several times until he falls off of a balcony. But when they go to retrieve his body, Michael has already vanished. We know he later returns to continue terrorizing Laurie in the hospital in Halloween II.

Now, there have been some alternate versions of the movie, like the "clean" version meant for network television airing and the extended cut that is available on the Blu-ray release, which includes some extra footage filmed during Halloween II shoots. But nothing as extensive as is being alleged and certainly not of Michael dying.

In short, Carpenter has spoken, and I think we can take his word as the law on this matter. There's never been a version of Halloween where Michael dies. Case closed. Now Halloween Ends, on the other hand...
