Johnny returns for In a Violent Nature 2, first film gets Shudder date
By Mads Lennon
Fans received a shock during this year's San Diego Comic Con when In a Violent Nature star Johnny made a surprise appearance at "The Bold Voice of Contemporary Horror" Panel. The frightening killer, who uses a metal hook as his weapon of choice, was the breakout star of the IFC Films and Shudder found-footage horror film shot predominantly from the perspective of the killer.
Johnny was devised as a way to riff on the original horror slasher icons, mostly notably Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise. And now he'll be back for In a Violent Nature 2, reports Variety. Chris Nash, who wrote and directed the first movie, will return as screenwriter for the sequel.
Scott Shooman, the head of AMC Networks' film group, released a statement shared by Variety, promising that the sequel film will aim to make Johnny "meaner" and make his kills "more impressive."
One of the defining scenes of the first film was a particularly gruesome scene that involved Johnny attacking a young woman doing yoga and using his hooks to kill her in a way that defies the written word. You'd have to see it to believe it. I'm interested in seeing what other creative kills they can come up with, perhaps inventive enough to rival those commonly found in the Terrifier franchise.
It has been a fantastic year for original horror stories with In a Violent Nature releasing theatrically back in May and becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time for IFC Films. Another original horror movie, Longlegs, also broke box office records for distributor Neon, and several other big horror movies released this year—like MaXXXine, The First Omen, and A Quiet Place: Day One—have received critical acclaim. It's always a good time to be a horror fan, but now is a particularly good time!
Besides the news that In a Violent Nature is getting a sequel, we also received the first look at a teaser poster and confirmation that the first film will begin streaming on Shudder on Friday, September 13.
