Lionsgate opening The Gate and The Lair Of The White Worm SteelBooks
By TJ Dietsch
Many horror fans love collecting their favorite films and displaying them in any number of ways. It not only lets you easily access your collection, but also allows you to show off a bit. Lionsgate recently announced a pair of SteelBook Walmart exclusives that will look mighty fine on a shelf, both of which are scheduled for a May 14 release: The Gate and The Lair Of The White Worm.
The Gate debuted in 1987 and became very popular to many of the kids who saw it over the years. That's because the Tibor Takacs-directed film focuses mainly on a pair of boys Glen (Stephen Dorff) and Terry (Louis Tripp) who discover a portal to hell in the backyard complete with tiny monsters. The film does not shy away from putting the characters through the ringer, but also embraces the power of rock and roll records, setting it firmly in it the canon of 80s Kids On Bikes movies, though there are very few cycles at play.
This new packaging of the film features a new cover drawn by Vance Kelly. The Blu-ray includes the same special features that were originally on Lionsgate's Vestron Video release and offer an in-depth look at the making of the film. There are two feature-length commentaries, one lead by Takacs (I, Madman), writer Michael Nankin and Special Effects Designer and Supervisor Randall William Cook. Cook also heads a separate commentary with members of the team who crafted the film's unique look.
In addition to all of the usual trailers and still galleries, you also get a series of featurettes including "The Gate: Unlocked," "Minion Maker," "Made In Canada," the vintage "Making Of The Gate" and more.
Meanwhile, the SteelBook of The Lair Of The White Worm presents another chance to get your hands on the same features from the Vestron Blu-ray with a shiny shell. Based on a story by Dracula author Bram Stoker (sorta) the film is helmed by Ken Russell, the genius behind Gothic and Altered States. The 1988 film stars Hugh Grant, Amanda Donohoe, Catherine Oxenberg, Sammi Davis and Peter Capaldi dealing with ancient sorcerers, snake gods, wild hallucinations and vats of venom. The kind of movie that really has to be experienced, it's a veritable feast for the eyes.
The SteelBook Blu-ray comes emblazoned with Vance Kelly art and contains a slew of special features. In addition to an audio commentary with Russell himself, there's also one with Ken's widow Lisi Russell in conversation with film historian Matthew Melia as well as stills and trailers. Other extras include the “Worm Food: The Effects of The Lair of the White Worm” featurette and interviews with editor Peter Davies and actress Sammi Davis, who played Mary Trent in the film.
Both the Gate and Lair Of The White Worm Blu-ray SteelBooks will be available at Walmart (and only there) on May 15 with a suggested retail price of $23.99.
