Maggie Gyllenhaal is planning a big day for Frankenstein, but it's not the one you're thinking of. The actress-turned-director is helming a film at Warner Bros. called The Bride that takes inspiration from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as opposed to the similarly named classic Universal Monster movie The Bride Of Frankenstein. She recently took to Instagram to reveal images labeled #cameratest.

As you can see, the images feature Jessie Buckley as the title character and her tattooed betrothed played by Christian Bale. They will be joined by Annette Bening, Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard and Julianne Hough in the re-imagining of one of the most important novels of all time. Buckley also starred in Gyllenhaal's directorial debut The Lost Daughter which was released by Netflix in 2021.

Set in the 1930s, the Chicago-based film finds Bale's Frankenstein's Monster asking for a mate. A mad scientist finds a recently murdered young woman played by Buckley and brings her back. However, her existence effects them all differently and even brings about social change.

In Shelley's novel, which is much larger in scope than most of the adaptations, the Creature demands that Dr. Frankenstein create a mate for him so he can have a hope at happiness. Threatened with the murder of his loved ones, Frankenstein got to work, but ultimately had a change of heart that lead to the new creations destruction and the monster staying true to his word.

The Bride is expected to come alive in theaters and IMAX on October 2, 2025.
