MaXXXine slated for a July 2024 release in theaters: Everything to know
There are two new horror films we absolutely can't wait to see in theaters this July, and they are Longlegs and MaXXXine. However, we're a tad bit more excited to see MaXXXine. We've been waiting for the third installment of the X film series for a while now. If you're just like us and are looking forward to seeing this upcoming horror movie, make sure to continue reading because we shared all there is to know about it right below.
We first learned of MaXXXine back in 2022 when Ti West, the director behind the first two films in the X trilogy, announced that a third film was in development at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. A teaser clip was also dropped, getting fans pumped up even more for its release.
Serving as a direct sequel to X, West returned to write and direct MaXXXine with Mia Goth reprising one of the two roles she played in the first film. Goth returns as Maxine, the only survivor of a massacre that occurred at a rural Texas farm in 1979. It's now 1985, and Maxine is finally getting her big break in the film industry in Los Angeles, California. But her dream of being a famous actress is threatened when her past catches up to her and a mysterious killer known as "The Night Stalker" begins stalking her.
Joining Goth in the cast are Elizabeth Debicki as a film director, Michelle Monaghan as an LAPD detective, Bobby Cannavale as an LAPD detective, Giancarlo Esposito as an agent for adult film and Z-list movie actors, and Kevin Bacon as a private detective. Moses Sumney, Lily Collins, and Halsey are also in the cast. In addition, A24 is behind the distribution of the film with Goth, West, Jacob Jaffke, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss serving as producers.
Filming took place from April to May 2023 in Los Angeles, California, with editing reported to be almost finished in February 2024.
MaXXXine theatrical release date
Mark your calendar because MaXXXine is set to be released in theaters on Friday, July 5, 2024. Tickets should be available to purchase as we get closer to the release. While there isn't a streaming release date yet, it'll most likely make its way to Max sometime after its theatrical release. This is because of a deal that A24 has with Warner Bros. Discovery where A24 movies will stream exclusively on HBO, Max, and Cinemax after their theatrical runs.
A digital release is also expected sometime after the film is released in theaters. We'll get back to you with these juicy deets once they're announced. But for now, the only way you'll be able to watch MaXXXine is by heading to the theaters on July 5.

In May 2023, the official Instagram account for MaXXXine shared a production still from the movie featuring Goth and Halsey in character. Check it out below.
What MaXXXine director Ti West has said about the sequel
Ti West spoke with Entertainment Weekly in May 2024 and had a lot to say about the upcoming horror flick, including sharing a little about what fans can expect to see in the new film. He mentions that like in the previous movies, not every character will make it to the end.
"Some people, in a very gruesome way, don't make it to the end. If you're expecting it to be part of this X movie and people will be killed, yeah, I'm going to deliver on all those things. But it's going to zig instead of zag in a lot of places that people aren't expecting. It's a very decadent world that she lives in, and it's a very aggressive world that she lives in, but the threat shows up in an unexpected way."

West also calls the the third installment a much bigger film than the previous installments. Here's what he said below.
"The thing that the other two movies don't have is that sort of scope. To try to do a big, sprawling Los Angeles ensemble movie is what the movie was, and that's just a big undertaking. There's a kind of noir-ish mystery vibe to the movie that's very fun."

So, could there possibly be a fourth movie in the X film series in the future? According to West, there could be another movie, but it most likely won't be centered around the Maxine character. He tells Entertainment Weekly that MaXXXine "will probably be the end of the Maxine era." While he remained tight-lipped on what a potential fourth film could be about, he told Entertainment Weekly that he does have some ideas.
"I do have one idea that plays into these movies that could maybe happen. I don't know if it'll be next. It might be. We'll see."
- Ti West
While there's a high chance of a fourth film, it doesn't look like we'll be seeing it anytime soon. West tells Entertainment Weekly that he's "eager for a break" after working on the first three films. At the time of the interview, he was still working on the editing process for MaXXXine. Here's what West said about taking a break from the X film series after MaXXXine.
"Then hopefully I can just put this in a box under the bed, take a breath, and figure out what's next. I'll say that, if there's more to be done in this X franchise, it's certainly not what people are expecting it to be. It's not just picking up again a few years later and whatever. It's different in the way that Pearl was an unexpected departure. It's another unexpected departure."
