Meet the younger versions of your favorite Dexter characters as prequel starts filming

Dexter: Original Sin has started filming in Miami. Here's who stars in the upcoming series!

The Dexter prequel series is moving forward, with filming underway in Miami, Florida. After the success of the sequel series Dexter: New Blood, Showtime and Paramount+ announced the development of a prequel, which has been ordered to series.

Dexter: Original Sin will follow 20-year-old Dexter Morgan as he makes his first kill under the tutelage of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan. Christian Slater will play Harry in the prequel, taking over for James Remar, while The OA star Patrick Gibson has been cast as the younger Dexter. Molly Brown (Evil) takes over for Jennifer Carpenter as 16-year-old Debra Morgan.

Additional casting was announced on June 5, revealing the actors who play the younger counterparts of other familiar faces from Dexter's Miami Metro Police Department, such as Vince Masuka, Maria LeGuerta, and Angel Batista, per The Hollywood Reporter.

  • James Martinez (Love, Victor) as the up-and-coming detective Angel Batista
  • Christina Milian (Falling Inn Love) as Miami PD's first female homicide detective, Maria LeGuerta
  • Alex Shimizu (The Blacklist) as the wise-cracking forensic analyst Vince Masuka

In addition to the familiar characters listed above, Dexter: Original Sin has also added Mike & Molly actor Reno Wilson as a new character, Harry's long-time partner and close confidant, Bobby Watts.

Dexter: Original Sin comes two years after Dexter: New Blood, a continuation of the original hit series starring Michael C. Hall. New Blood saw the return of Hall as the titular serial killer and ended with (SPOILER!) him dying at the hands of his son, Harrison Morgan.

I'd rather see a continuation that follows Harrison's storyline and his potential for darkness. Will he follow in his father's footsteps? I'm not sure how necessary a Dexter prequel series is, mainly because the original show thoroughly explored Dexter's past via frequent flashbacks. We already know how Dexter became a killer. Nonetheless, I'll be sure to check out the prequel, if only because original showrunner Clyde Phillips is returning to helm it.
