Mike Colter discusses David's 'interesting dynamic' with Andy in Evil season 4
By Mads Lennon
While it's sad that Evil is coming to an end with its fourth season, at least we know this show is about to go out on a high note, at least if the premiere is anything to go by!
The first episode of the season contained a specific scene that I think we've all been waiting to see play out since the show began. A tense confrontation between Andy and David. (SPOILERS!) Of course, Andy didn't get that angry of his own accord.
He might be physically free of Leland and Sheryl's influence, but not mentally. They're still very much controlling him, and Leland wants to drive a David-shaped wedge between Andy and his wife, Kristen. Thanks to Leland's manipulation, Andy drives himself to the church and confronts David, point-blank accusing him of sleeping with Kristen, even though we know that's never actually happened (despite both characters clearly wanting to at one point or other).
We chatted with Evil star Mike Colter, who has played David Acosta for all four seasons of the series. Here's what he had to say about working with Andy's actor, Patrick Brammel, more this season.
"Patrick is a really talented actor and [Kristen and Andy] have such different scenes, it's almost like another world that I'm not privy to. I don't know what goes on in their home life. It's a different thing, so to be confronted by that in my workplace, in my church, it's like I had to sort of use my imagination in terms of playing that scene. [It was] really interesting because you know that you are somewhat guilty of something that you have not yet done, but you have thought about, so in some regard, you think he is justified in his discomfort and anger."
I also found it interesting that, in some ways, Kristen is losing many of her allies this season with her therapist, Kurt, going down a dark road of demonic possession to help him write his book while her husband is under the influence of Leland.
Speaking with Katja Herbers, who plays Kristen Bouchard, she mentioned that even though Kristen is "a vulnerable person" who might occasionally need to go "cry it out in a corner" because she is human and not "immune" to all the craziness happening in her life. But ultimately, Kristen doesn't think about it that way.
She doesn't think "that she's ever not going to be okay," which speaks to her strength and resilience as a character and a mother.
The premiere episode of Evil season 4 is now streaming, with new episodes set to air weekly on Thursdays only on Paramount+.
