More details have emerged about the upcoming Until Dawn film, based on the popular 2015 narrative horror video game of the same name from developer Supermassive Games. While the movie version will apparently be quite different story-wise from the game, we know at least one important character is returning.

Actor Peter Stormare is reportedly back as Dr. Alan J. Hill, the therapist who psychoanalyzes the player in-game between chapters. He kind of functions as a narrator role, similar to how The Curator, played by the late Tony Pankhurst, functions in Supermassive's other horror game series, The Dark Pictures Anthology.

So far, Stormare is the only actor from the video game reprising a character in the movie. It seems unlikely that we'll see other actors like Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, or Brett Dalton return unless it's for a cameo or maybe to play a new character.

In addition to Stormare, The Hollywood Reporter shares that the cast will include The Fosters and Good Trouble star Maia Mitchell and Belmont Cameli, star of Peacock's Saved By the Bell reboot and Netflix film Along for the Ride. Mitchell and Cameli join a cast that also features Odessa A'zion, Michael Cimino, Ella Rubin, and Ji-young Yoo.

Filming for the movie will begin later this month. It's being helmed by Lights Out director David F. Sandberg, with the most recent version of the script by Annabelle Comes Home's Gary Dauberman. Blair Butler (The Invitation) penned the initial version.

In his statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Sandberg had this to say:

"I’ve been longing to do horror again after 'Lights Out' and 'Annabelle: Creation,' and this film explores the many great subgenres of horror to create the most terrifying experience possible. Capturing the essence of the game but with new characters, it serves as a great stand-alone introduction to the world for the newcomer as well as offers something new that the fans of the game will enjoy."

Sony Screen Gems has not yet shared official plot details, but rumors have surfaced online indicating that the movie will have a new story and won't share many similarities with the game. Sandberg's statement seems to verify that, at least confirming that the movie cast is comprised of newcomers (apart from Dr. Hill). Until Dawn is being described as an R-rated horror movie and a "love letter" to the genre.

The movie itself isn't likely to release until 2025 at the earliest, but fans do have something else exciting to look forward to this year with the upcoming remaster, announced during the PlayStation State of Play in January. Carefully rebuilt using the Unreal Engine 5, this updated version of Until Dawn will be released exclusively on PS5 and PC. It will include improved audio, visual, and more.
