Netflix shares new Tomb Raider anime teaser and it looks like a globetrotting adventure for the ages

One of this fall's most anticipated Netflix Originals is the upcoming anime take on a beloved video game franchise. Lara Croft takes center stage in the upcoming Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, premiering globally this October. The streamer recently released an exciting new teaser featuring heart-pounding adventures and stunts.
The upcoming iteration of Lara Croft will take DNA from all previous Tomb Raider games, but the storyline is predominantly focused on following the Survivor trilogy, which started with the 2013 reboot game Tomb Raider and followed up with Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
While both the 2013 and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, were well-received by fans, the third entry in the trilogy was a lot more polarizing. The Survivor trilogy as a whole is still a source of much debate for diehard fans of the franchise, some of whom prefer Lara's characterization in the earlier games.
When it comes to the television and film adaptations of Tomb Raider, things get even more contentious. Angelina Jolie memorably brought Lara Croft to life on the big screen in the first two official Tomb Raider films, with Alicia Vikander stepping in for the rebooted 2018 movie. But while the films were financially successful, they didn't do well with critics or audiences (though there are many fans who did enjoy them). Overall, the anime has the opportunity to be the best of the adaptations.
Marvel actress Hayley Atwell will step into the role previously voiced by Camilla Luddington in the Survivor trilogy video game series. Earl Baylon, who voiced Jonah Maiava in all three Survivor games, returns to reprise his role as Jonah in the anime. You can hear him in the teaser embedded above.
Other cast members include Allen Maldonaldo (Heels) who will voice tech expert Zip, a character from the Legend timeline of Tomb Raider, and Zoe Boyle (Frontier) as Camille Roth.
Series writer/showrunner/EP Tasha Huo previously confirmed that the anime will combine elements of the many Tomb Raider timelines.
What is Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft about?
As mentioned above, this new take on the series will pick up in the aftermath of the Survivor trilogy, following the iconic heroine's next chapter.
Here's the synopsis shared by Netflix:
"Following the events of the Survivor series, Lara Croft has abandoned her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures. But she must return home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection. Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she will be forced to confront her true self, and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become."
The first season will reportedly consist of eight episodes, each one about 20-25 minutes in length.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft will premiere exclusively on Netflix on Oct. 10.
