Since the announcement of a seventh film, the Scream franchise has been the subject of much buzz (both bad and good). But this time around, we've received some news that will make many Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) fans very happy.

Back in August 2023, Scream VII (unofficial title) was officially announced to be in development with film director Christopher Landon set to direct. However, the filmmaking process ended up being slowed down due to the writers and actors strikes. Then, the movie hit another obstacle in production when its main star, Melissa Barrera, was fired, and another main cast member, Jenna Ortega, exited the film.

Since then, so much has happened. Guy Busick was announced to be writing the script from a story he co-wrote with James Vanderbilt, Scream creator Kevin Williamson had taken over directing duties from Landon, and scream queen Neve Campbell had rejoined the slasher franchise to reprise her role as the iconic Sidney Prescott in the seventh film. If you recall, Campbell had departed the franchise after the fifth film over a salary dispute.

Now, Campbell has come out and shared her reason for coming back for Scream VII. Obviously, the salary dispute was resolved, but there's another reason why the talented actress decided to return. Campbell spoke with Entertainment Tonight in July 2024 and revealed that the seventh film will revolve around her Sidney character. She tells ET's Rachel Smith that after being pitched the concept of the film following her character's story, it's the reason she "jumped on board."

"I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I'm so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades."

During the interview, Campbell also revealed to Smith that she hadn't received the final script for the film just yet but is hoping to receive it soon. Scream VII is set to start filming this December. Besides Campbell, no other actors have been cast in the movie.

However, fans are hoping to see the return of Scream alumni Courteney Cox and Patrick Dempsey, and based on Campbell's interview with ET, there's a chance this might happen. When asked about Dempsey's potential return, Campbell replies by saying, "may-haps." Then, when asked about Cox's potential return, she responds by shaking her head and saying, "Yeah, yeah, yeah." Fingers crossed, Dempsey and Cox make their return!
