The Scream franchise might be headed toward a spinoff and another TV show, according to rumor

All eyes have been on the Scream franchise ahead of the seventh film, and a new rumor suggests this won't be the end of Ghostface.

After Scream VI debuted in 2023, horror fans were so excited for the future of Ghostface. The sixth film delivered new life to the franchise as it switched locations from California to New York, following the "Core Four" — Sam, Tara, Mindy, and Chad — as they attempted to start fresh in the Big Apple for college. Well, at least most of them were enrolled. The movie dealt with Sam and Tara's new dynamic after they survived the latest Woodsboro murders while introducing a new trio(!) of Ghostfaces, making for an all-around thrilling watch. I saw this one twice in theaters; I love it so much.

At this point, however, it seems a large portion of the Scream fanbase is unsure of the franchise's future. Yes, we know Scream 7 is happening, but after behind-the-scenes drama, many people don't even want the movie anymore. Well, no matter your feelings about the franchise, it might continue for a long time to come.

More Scream sequels, a spinoff, and TV show could be in the works

Internet personality and trusted scooper Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK) took to his Patreon account to share a potential leak he's heard involving the Scream franchise. According to the post: “The idea post-Scream 7 is to [spread] the franchise. Making not just more sequels but a spinoff and a new TV show.” Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised, but do we need it? I'm not sure.

Of course, I want to make sure our readers know that this potential scoop is not confirmed by Spyglass or anyone involved in the Scream franchise. While Richtman has been correct in his scoops before, this could always be wrong. For now, we will consider this a rumor and be on the lookout for potential confirmation.

The hype around a seventh Scream movie was definitely felt by the full fandom. After it was confirmed, fans were excited to hear the news in Aug. 2023 that Christopher Landon was on board to direct, best known for helming Happy Death Day (and its sequel) and Freaky. We really could've had it all with Scream 7, but then it came crashing down. Unfortunately, star Melissa Barrera was fired by Spyglass in Nov. 2023 after she spoke out on the Israel-Palestine war, and shortly after it was reported that Jenna Ortega would not return due to scheduling issues. Then, Landon exited the film.

Is Scream 7 even worth watching without the Core Four? Well, there is a glimmer of hope that's pulled some of the Scream fandom back in. Neve Campbell, who did not appear in Scream VI because of pay disputes with the studio, will return at Sidney Prescott for the next movie. In an interview with People Magazine, the actress expressed her excitement about getting back into her most iconic role: "I've lived with Sidney for 30 years, and I'm really, really grateful to get to go back to it." Her salary for the new movie has not been revealed, but she shared the negotiations from the studio "started out in a strong place," which she called "lovely."

Another great part about the sequel is that writer Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first, second, and fourth movies, will pen the script. Courteney Cox is reportedly in talks to return, and there have also been rumors about other iconic characters coming back for Scream 7. At this time, though, a full cast list has not been announced, and neither has a plot synopsis.

The Scream franchise is in a much different place than it was just a year ago, and I don't blame fans for being hesitant to hold hope for the future. We'll have to wait and see if those rumors from DanielRPK turn out to be true. With the amount of money these movies bring in, I could totally see an expansion of the franchise happening, especially now that Campbell is back in.
