One of this year's most underrated horror movies is coming to Netflix in August
By Mads Lennon
I know it got a measly 18% score on Rotten Tomatoes and that audiences also hated it, but I think Tarot was a decent, fun little PG-13 horror flick ideal for teenagers at a sleepover or a lazy rainy Sunday. Maybe it wasn't worth shelling out to pay and see it in theaters along with the price of concessions, but if you have a Netflix subscription then I think Tarot is a great choice for any night you're looking for a new release to watch.
The Sony horror film was released in theaters this past May, and since it is Sony, we knew it would inevitably come to Netflix thanks to the deal between them. Now you won't have to wait much longer as Tarot is officially slated to begin streaming on the service on Thursday, August 1. There's even a Netflix page already set up where you can choose to set a reminder to get notified when it debuts.
Tarot centers on a group of college students who rent an old mansion in the Catskills to celebrate their friend's birthday. After finding an old deck of Tarot cards in the manor's basement, one of the friends, Haley (Harriet Slater), performs readings for each person in attendance. When the group returns to campus, they slowly start to die in gruesome ways eerily similar to what was predicted during their readings. The film also features Mean Girls actress Avantika and Spider-Man: No Way Home's Jacob Batalon.
With a simple storyline, decent performances, and really cool monster designs, Tarot is a short and fast-paced watch that will keep you entertained even if it doesn't become a personal favorite. It might not be the most original or memorable movie out there, especially not in a year filled with top-notch horror films like Longlegs, The First Omen, and MaXXXine, but it's still a fun one that I think is worth watching if only to appreciate the creature designs!
If you don't want to wait until Tarot hits Netflix on August 1, you can purchase or rent the film now on VOD and it's also available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray.
