Apple's hit legal thriller Presumed Innocent has received a season 2 renewal from Apple, 1428 Elm has learned. According to the press release says the second season will revolve around a "suspenseful, brand-new case." That's all we know thus far.

Premiering on June 12, Presumed Innocent follows the high-profile homicide trial of assistant prosecuting attorney Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve). Her colleague, prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), is arrested and tried as the leading suspect in Carolyn's brutal murder.

The series is based on Scott Turow's 1987 novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into a movie starring Harrison Ford in 1990. That film received a follow-up in the form of a short miniseries, Burden of Proof.

Turow wrote a follow-up novel titled Innocent that expanded on the contentious relationship between Rusty and Tommy Molto (funnily enough, played by Gyllenhaal's real-life brother-in-law Peter Sarsgaard on the show), which was adapted into a made-for-television film in 2011.

Apple's press release doesn't mention Innocent, so it seems like the series will take the anthology route and introduce a new case that doesn't involve Rusty or Tommy at all.

The most recent episode, "Pregame," centered around the opening days of Rusty's trial. Season 1 will wrap in two weeks, with the finale airing on July 24.

There's not much else to report on Presumed Innocent season 2 just yet, only that it is officially in development, and most of the team behind the scenes of season 1 will be back to produce season 2. David E. Kelly and J.J. Abrams will return as executive producers alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Dustin Thomason. Turow will also co-executive produce.
