Samara Weaving is hunted by a religious cult in chilling trailer for Azrael
By Mads Lennon
Samara Weaving is bloodied up and getting chased by a bunch of people again! Except, unlike Ready or Not, this time, her character, Azrael, is tormented in the middle of the woods somewhere after she escapes imprisonment.
The upcoming film from Shudder and IFC Films, fittingly titled Azrael, sees Weaving's character doing everything she possibly can to survive when she becomes the target of a group of mute zealots intent on making her pay for escaping. Based on the trailer, she's going to have to fight tooth and nail to stay alive as the zealots seem to be joined by some kind of ferocious creature that joins in the hunt. At one point it looks like Azrael even gets buried alive.
Azrael is from director E.L. Katz, best known for his films Cheap Thrills and Small Crimes, from a script penned by Simon Barrett, who wrote and directed the 2021 film Seance and worked on the script for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
While Weaving is the main star in Azrael, she's joined by a cast that includes Vic Carmen Sonne (Explosions in My Heart), Katariina Unt (Undergods), and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits). The film made its debut at this year's South by Southwest this past March and will start playing theatrically in September.
Read the full synopsis:
"In a world in which no one speaks, a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Samara Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil which resides deep within the surrounding wilderness – but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival. From the seeds of this gritty, relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation, comes an immersive, real-time, action horror tale from the visionary minds of Simon Barrett and E.L. Katz."
Azrael is just one of several projects Weaving has lined up. She will also star in the comedy-thriller Borderline with Eric Dane and the heist thriller Eenie Meanie. Weaving and Kyle Gallner will reportedly co-star in Adam Rehmeier's movie Caroline Caroline, described as a new take on Bonnie & Clyde.
Azrael premieres in theaters beginning on September 27. It will be added to Shudder at a later date.
