Shark attack film series 47 Meters Down getting a third movie titled The Wreck
The Meg, who? That's how we're feeling now that we know a third installment in the hit 47 Meters Down film series is in the works. It's titled 47 Meters Down: The Wreck, and we've shared all there is to know about the shark movie below!
The 47 Meters Down film series began with the 2017 survival horror film of the same name. Due to the movie's success, a sequel was announced and would later be titled 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. Both movies centered around people having to find a way to escape a bunch of sharks and starred actors you'd probably recognize, such as Claire Holt, Mandy Moore, Matthew Modine, Sophie Nélisse, Brianne Tju, and Nia Long. Now, almost five years after the release of the second film, we've learned that a third movie is officially happening.
British filmmaker and screenwriter Johannes Roberts, who co-wrote the scripts for the first two films in the franchise as well as directed them, returns to co-write the screenplay for 47 Meters Down: The Wreck alongside screenwriter Ernest Riera. Riera co-wrote the scripts for the first two movies with Roberts. However, Roberts will be passing over directing duties this time around to Canadian filmmaker Patrick Lussier, who is known for helming the slasher film My Bloody Valentine 3D.
FilmNation returns as the sales agent and will introduce the shark film to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. However, no actors have been cast in the movie yet. According to Deadline, casting discussions are reportedly being had. In addition, production is set to start in the fall of 2024.
Allen Media Group Motion Pictures (AMGMP) and Tea Shop Productions are the production companies behind the film, with Roberts, James Harris, and Mark Lane signed on as producers and Byron Allen, Carolyn Folks, Jennifer Lucas, Chris Charalambous, and Matthew Signer as executive producers.
Instead of following a pair of sisters or a group of teenage girls like in the first two films, 47 Meters Down: The Wreck will follow a father and daughter who decide to spend quality time together by exploring a famous shipwreck while scuba diving. But their bonding time takes a left turn when their scuba diving instructor has an accident and leaves them alone deep down in the ocean at the wreck site. Now, the father and daughter duo must find a way to escape the wreck before the great white sharks get to them first.
Here's the official synopsis via Deadline:
"The story will follow a father who is determined to rebuild his relationship with his daughter as they bond during a scuba diving in beautiful tropical waters while exploring a famous shipwreck. But soon after their descent, their master diver has an accident leaving them alone and unprotected inside the labyrinth of the wreck. As tensions rise and oxygen dwindles, the pair must use their newfound bond to escape the wreck and the relentless barrage of bloodthirsty great white sharks."
Roberts spoke with Deadline and also expressed his excitement about the upcoming film by saying this, "We can’t wait for audiences to be trapped underwater with us again. 47 Meters Down: The Wreck is going to be the biggest, most-intense film of this franchise.”
