Speak No Evil, Megan Fox sci-fi thriller, and 4 more scary movies releasing this week

If you regularly go to the cinema, chances are you've seen the trailer for the upcoming Blumhouse-produced Speak No Evil remake a million times already. If you're like me, you're looking forward to the film's release just so you don't have to see the ads anymore. Well, good news! The film is out this week, so we can see if all the marketing is worth it.

Besides that, several notable horror movies are coming to VOD, including a sci-fi film where Megan Fox plays a rogue sentient fembot and a psychological thriller starring Connie Britton. On the television side, we still have another week or so before the horror shows (and festive baking shows) return, but the fascinating Shudder documentary series Horror's Greatest continues with a new episode on Tuesday, September 10, highlighting Japanese horror.

Speak No Evil (Theaters, Sept. 13)

Speak No Evil is an American remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name. The 2022 film was fantastic, and a significant chunk of it was in English already, so I'm still baffled as to why this remake was necessary. It will have to do something pretty remarkable to justify its existence.

The biggest draw so far will be James McAvoy's performance. Otherwise, at the very least, with Speak No Evil finally hitting theaters this week, we'll all be free of seeing that stupid trailer all the time.

Subservience (VOD, Sept. 13)

Megan Fox re-teams with Till Death director S.K. Dale for a sci-fi thriller about an AI bot that gains sentience. Till Death was a pleasant surprise, a tense and claustrophobic home invasion thriller that gave Fox a lot of room to experiment and prove her acting prowess.

I'm a little less enthused about this one just because the plotline is something we've seen done so many times, but I'll give it a chance. 365 Days actor Michele Morrone also stars as the guy who purchases the fembot played by Fox.

Creeping Death (Screambox, Sept. 10)

This Screambox exclusive is a supernatural slasher flick perfect for the spooky season, as the film centers on a young kid who just wants to spend a quiet Halloween night at home.

All Hallow's Eve used to be his favorite holiday until his mother was diagnosed with cancer. His quiet night in is disrupted when a few friends show up holding a mysterious stolen sack. Their theft leads to the resurrection of a vengeful Celtic spirit, and the boys will have to work together to survive the night or sacrifice their lives to appease it.

Trope (BET+, Sept. 12)

An original slasher film for the streaming service BET+, Trope looks like a pretty fun horror film that is also being described as "meta." Given the title and the trailer for the movie, Trope looks like it will include a lot of, well, horror tropes.

The trailer teases a group of friends heading to a cabin in the woods for a weekend retreat when they stumble upon a horrific conspiracy that includes mad science experiments and more.

Here After (Limited Theaters/VOD, Sept. 13)

Queen Connie Britton stars in this psychological thriller about a mother struggling with her daughter in the aftermath of a devastating accident. After Robin's (Freya Hannan-Mills) accident, she barely manages to make it through.

Once home and in recovery, it seems like Robin is starting to get better until her mother (Britton) notices something is amiss and fears something might have attached itself to Robin while she was in the hospital.

Believer (Limited Theaters/VOD, Sept. 13)

When a young woman is attacked by an infamous cult leader and mass murderer, her life takes a dark and inexplicable turn. She claims to have no memory of the attack, leading her loved ones to wonder if there might be something more sinister at play and if she's telling the whole truth. Believer stars Lauren Lee Smith, Ella Ballentine, Peter Mooney, and Kris Holden-Ried.
