Stephen Soderbergh's next film puts us in the perspective of a mysterious entity
By Mads Lennon
Earlier this year we got a movie shot from the perspective of a serial killer with In a Violent Nature. Next comes Presence, a film that appears to tell a story from the point of view of something spectral.
If the latest teaser shared above doesn't hook you, then perhaps the fact it's a film from Stephen Soderbergh might. From the guy who gave us Logan Lucky, Unsane, Contagion, Ocean's Eleven, and more comes a new kind of psychological thriller based on a script from David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible).
The details about Presence are being kept very vague. Three teasers have been released thus far, and each one is barely a minute long. But apart from Soderbergh's involvement, Presence has a fantastic distributor attached in Neon, the company behind the brilliant marketing campaign for this year's breakout Longlegs and the acclaimed Palme d'Or winner Anora. Neon is also set to distribute next year's The Monkey and Life of Chuck.
For this third teaser (embedded at the top of the article), all we get is a close-up of a sleeping woman, as if something unseen is watching her. Almost like Paranormal Activity if the ghost was on the prowl rather than just viewers seeing things through video camera footage. The words included say that this woman will feel loss, love, fear, and a presence. It's similar to the quotes used in the previous teasers.
Little else is known about Presence except that centers on a family in a home haunted by something. The film also stars Lucy Liu, Julia Fox, and Chris Sullivan.
While Presence doesn't release theatrically for general audiences until January 2025, it did have its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year, and critical reception has been positive. The film currently holds an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 53 reviews.
Mashable says, "Presence is a remarkable union of a clever concept and a superb execution," while Vulture says, "It’s an art film that also works as a spellbinding horror film, and it might be the best thing Soderbergh has done in ages."
Presence will be released in theaters on January 17, 2025.
