Subservience review: A fun, sexy, and serviceable AI thriller

Subservience doesn't exactly break any new ground, but it's still an entertaining sci-fi thriller, and the leads have great chemistry.

Given the rise of artificial intelligence in real life, it's not surprising that we're seeing more movies try to tackle that complicated subject. There are notable titles like M3GAN, Ex Machina, and The Terminator movies, but the latest addition to the subgenre is Subservience.

A new film from director S.K. Dale, who previously collaborated with Subservience star Megan Fox on the thriller Till Death, this science fiction thriller revolves around Nick (365 Days star Michele Morrone), a father struggling to balance taking care of his two children and his sick wife Maggie (Madeline Zima). Looking for some assistance, he purchases a gynoid named Alice (Fox).

As is often the case with these types of stories, Alice is initially a welcome change to the family dynamic as she helps ease Nick's burden and keep the household running smoothly. Then things become steamy between Nick and Alice, and that's when things start to take a dark turn. The more Alice becomes obsessed with Nick, the more determined she is to eliminate anything that could be a potential threat to his happiness, including his family members.

A seductive and entertaining film, Subservience doesn't reinvent the mold or change up the formula for these sorts of movies too much. However, it's still compelling to watch, thanks to the performances of the three main leads, particularly Fox.

With AI shaping the future of our world as we know it, sometimes it's a good idea to take a step back and see what could actually happen someday if our technology keeps progressing in its current direction. Perhaps the story at the heart of Subservience isn't all that far off anymore.

Whether or not you believe that, it's a thrilling and fast-paced movie with an exciting third act that will keep you riveted. Give it a shot this weekend.

Subservience is now available on VOD.
