One of the best horror movies to be released in theaters in 2022 was hands down The Black Phone. It was an unexpected hit at the box office, which prompted Universal and Blumhouse to announce a collaboration again on a sequel. Below, we shared everything we know so far about the upcoming The Black Phone 2.

In June 2022, ideas for a potential sequel were already being discussed between The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson and Joe Hill, the author behind the short story the film is based on. But it wasn't until October 2023 that a sequel was officially ordered by Universal and Blumhouse. The two companies stated that with The Black Phone 2, it'll be the "launch of a sinister new franchise." A theatrical release date was also announced at the time.

When is The Black Phone 2 coming to theaters?

The highly anticipated standalone sequel was previously set to release in theaters on June 27, 2025, but has now been pushed back several months to October 17, 2025. M3GAN 2.0 will now take over the June 27 date.

A streaming and digital release is also expected but not confirmed. When it comes to where the sequel would stream, it would most likely be on Peacock since that's where Universal movies stream after their theatrical runs. Also, a digital release is expected to happen sometime after the theatrical release as well, where you'll be able to rent or purchase the film digitally through Amazon Video, Google Play, Vudu, etc.

In November 2023, new casting and crew details were announced. Ethan Hawke (The Grabber), Mason Thames (Finney), Madeleine McGraw (Gwen), Jeremy Davies (Terrence), and Miguel Mora (Robin) were all announced to be returning in their respective roles for The Black Phone 2.

In addition, Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, who co-wrote the original film's screenplay, were announced to be co-writing the script for the sequel. Then, a month later, Derrickson was confirmed to be taking over directing duties again for The Black Phone 2.

Sadly, plot details are still being kept under wraps, but Derrickson teased in a 2022 interview with ComicBook that Hill has an idea for a sequel. Here's what he said below.

"Joe Hill pitched me a wonderful idea for a sequel to Black Phone that, if this movie does well, I'm gonna do it. He's got a great idea, I really liked it. Joe's very protective and personal about his material, but he came to me with the idea and I was like, 'That's how you do a sequel to Black Phone . That's terrific.'"
