The Dead Boy Detectives coming to Netflix in April as an eight-episode series
By Carla Davis
Netflix has created a new eight episode series based on characters included as part of The Sandman Universe. Dead Boy Detectives originated from the comic series brought to us from Nel Gaman.
Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland are teenage boys who are best buds, just solving mysteries together. Although they are decades apart in “real” age, as ghosts, they are the same age, and together they own and operate the Dead Boy Detective Agency.
In the comic book series, Edwin had been murdered back in 1916 at the boarding school he attended, and there he stayed as a ghost. In a more present day timeline, Charles (who was still living at the time) was the only student on campus during the holidays. When Charles too is murdered, he makes the decision to stick around and adventure with Edwin, who had tried to save his life at the school.
Edwin (played by George Rexstrew) is the brains behind the operation, and Charles (Jayden Revri) provides the brawn. The two keep their focus on solving mysteries involving the paranormal, and they are aided by Crystal (Kassius Nelson), a clairvoyant. Crystal’s friend Niko helps the team as well, and together, the group solves a lot of truly mystifying cases including the likes of witches and monsters…strictly cases of the supernatural variety.
The back history of Dead Boy Detectives series is a little wild. It was originally planned as an 8-episode HBO Max series, and a pilot was even filmed. Mid-production, HBO Max decided not to move forward “due to its incompatibility with the new DC Universe.”
That’s when Netflix stepped in and saved the day. Netflix would seem to be the perfect home for the series, since its origin story, The Sandman was also picked up by the streaming giant in 2022. Dead Boy Detectives will premiere on Netflix April 25, which is when all eight episodes will be available to binge.
