There are currently 4 must-see horror movies on Max's top 10 list
Have you checked out Max's top 10 movie list lately? As of Sept. 26, there appears to be a horror takeover going on, with there being four must-see horror movies included on the list. Two of the films came out this year, while the other two were released at different times. One of the movies, we'd even say, is one of our favorite horror flicks of 2024.
Have we caught your attention yet? If so, you're probably wondering what those horror movies are. Of course, we're not going to leave you hanging. Let's go ahead and start with the first film, I Saw the TV Glow, which is currently sitting at the No. 2 spot on Max's list and is personally one of my favorite movies of this year.
I Saw the TV Glow (2024)
I just know that A24 knew they had a hit on their hands with I Saw the TV Glow. For starters, it has an intriguing and original premise. It's a psychological horror film written and helmed by Jane Schoenbrun, and it centers around two troubled teenagers, Owen and Maddy, who form a deep bond over their mutual obsession with a mysterious late-night TV show. This television show helps them escape from their mundane lives for a bit.
However, things go awry when this show gets abruptly canceled. The two teens then find themselves having to navigate the emotional turmoil and existential crises brought on by its cancellation. They're forced to confront their own identities and realities, something they didn't have to do before the show's cancellation.
Justice Smith (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, The Voyeurs) portrays the role of Owen, while Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical, Bill & Ted Face the Music) plays Maddy. The rest of the cast is made up of Helena Howard, Lindsey Jordan, Conner O'Malley, Emma Portner, Ian Foreman, Fred Durst, and Danielle Deadwyler.
The Shining (1980)
"Here's Johnny!" Everyone knows that iconic line from the '80s horror classic, The Shining. This movie is currently ranked at the No. 8 spot on Max's top movie list, and it definitely deserves to be there.
Based on Stephen King's book of the same name, The Shining stars Jack Nicholson as an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic who, after taking on a job as a winter caretaker for a haunted Colorado hotel, finds his mental state deteriorating, pushing him towards madness. Joining Nicholson in the cast are the late Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson, Philip Stone, Joe Turkel, and others.
Here's what some critics had to say about this horror masterpiece via Rotten Tomatoes:
"The supernatural joins forces with psychosis in Stanley Kubrick’s superb adaptation of a Stephen King bestseller."
- Wendy Ide
"The Shining might be one of the most accessible classics to new viewers of today to understand why it is, in fact, one of the greatest and most influential horror films of all time. The ending is still mind-blowing after all these years."
- Manuel Sao Bento
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
If you're looking for a horror film that's more on the funny side, you should definitely check out the horror-comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies. It's hands down another one of A24's best horror flicks. That being said, it makes sense why it's currently taking over the No. 9 spot on Max's movie list.
The movie follows a group of friends who gather for a party at a remote mansion during a hurricane. To liven up the party, the friend group decides to play a little game called "Bodies Bodies Bodies." In the game, one person is designated as the killer, while the rest of the players must try to find who the killer is among them. But what starts off as an innocent murder in the dark-style game turns into a nightmare when actual murders begin to occur.
Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha'la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Rachel Sennott, Lee Pace, and Pete Davidson all star in this horror-comedy that'll surely have you laughing.
The Watchers (2024)
Last but not least is the supernatural horror film The Watchers, which is ranked at the No. 10 spot on Max's list. Look, this movie didn't receive positive reviews from critics, but don't let that turn you away from watching it. You might just enjoy it. I mean, it has an interesting premise, and the actors' performances were pretty good.
It stars Dakota Fanning as a young artist who, while trapped in a vast forest in western Ireland with three strangers, finds herself stalked by mysterious nocturnal creatures every night. Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouéré, Oliver Finnegan, Alistair Brammer, and John Lynch join Fanning in the cast.
All four horror movies listed above are streaming on Max right now. Don't forget to check them out when you get the chance!
