Unsolved Mysteries vol. 5 to feature 'most baffling mystery' of them all teases co-creator
By Mads Lennon
Good news for fans of the Netflix documentary series Unsolved Mysteries. Even though volume 4 was just released on the streamer on July 31, Variety has exclusively revealed that Netflix plans to drop four additional episodes in October!
The exact date for volume 5 hasn't been revealed yet, but Variety reports Netflix is planning to time the episodes to premiere close to Halloween, likely as part of the streaming service's annual Netflix & Chills line-up. We also expect Squid Game season 2 and the horror movie It's What's Inside to debut somewhere in that timeframe.
Variety says Netflix hasn't revealed which cases volume 5 will cover, but Unsolved Mysteries co-creator Terry Dunn Meurer told the outlet that the October batch features "the most baffling mystery of all of them [she's] ever done." That's a significant statement when you remember that Meurer has been on the show since its original 1987 inception and overseen hundreds of episodes.
But before the October episodes, Netflix subscribers have five new installments to watch. This latest batch includes a few lesser-known cases and two about far more famous mysteries, Jack the Ripper and alleged sightings of the creature of folklore known as Mothman.
Meurer labels volume 4's severed head episode as one of the 'most bizarre'
Meurer told the Tribune-Review that the volume 4 episode "The Severed Head" is one of the show's "most bizarre," as it involves a teenager stumbling upon an embalmed head in the woods near a bus stop.
"I’d just never heard of anything like an embalmed head that’s been professionally severed and no body is found. We don’t know the cause of death, the manner of death. It just took us down this road into the world of body parts trade."
Her theory is that the woman wasn't a homicide victim but that someone might have stolen her body for research purposes and, somehow, got caught up in the dark world of organ trading. She hopes that by featuring the case this season, someone might come forward with information that can reunite the head with its body and provide the loved ones of the deceased with closure.
All five episodes of Unsolved Mysteries volume 4 are now available on Netflix. The show's fifth volume will be released in October, date TBA. Stay tuned to 1428 Elm for more information on the show and true crime!
