Godzilla made his first appearance in 1954, and as of today, the franchise includes 33 Japanese films and 5 American films. Add comic books, toys and video games to the mix and you have a real power house.
Godzilla as a monster is a force to be reckoned with, without a doubt. He possesses an atomic heat beam, which is basically nuclear energy. He is super-strong and muscular, and amphibious, able to breathe underwater. He is seen as a reptile who was mutated into a nearly indestructible creature by exposure to radiation.
According to Wikizilla, the first film presented him as “a prehistoric amphibious sea creature that was disturbed and burned when an American hydrogen bomb test conducted in the Pacific Ocean destroyed his habitat and drew him to the surface.” That would explain a lot of his anger too, right?
Godzilla Minus One was released at the end of 2023 in celebration of his 70th year, and the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. In addition to the classic tone of the monster himself, the film uses survivor’s guilt and trauma to strike up a very human tone.
The success of Godzilla Minus One pretty much ensures that we will be seeing a lot more of the kaiju in the future.
You can access Godzilla: The Showa-Era Collection on Vudu’s website.
