The horror genre is quite diverse, but most horror works are known for featuring elements of gore and graphic violence. However, there are some horror works that heavily emphasize gore more than others. We're talking about horror movies, where in every other scene, a character is meeting a brutal, bloody death. These films really push the boundaries of how much blood can be shown on-screen and often feature explicit scenes of mutilation, torture, and extreme brutality. Viewers are kept on the edges of their seats in constant suspense, wondering who the next victim will be.

Overall, these types of films are definitely not for the faint of heart and can evoke fear and shock in many viewers. But maybe you don't get scared or get disturbed easily. If so, you should check out our list below of some of the most goriest mainstream horror movies ever.

Terrifier film series (2018-)

The Terrifier movies are known for their graphic violence, intense gore, and shock value. Two movies have been released so far with a Terrifier 3 set to be released in theaters on Oct. 11, 2024. All written and directed by Damien Leone, these slasher films center around a sadistic evil killer clown named Art the Clown as he goes on a gruesome killing spree. If you're wondering which Terrifier movie is the goriest out of the two that have been released already, it would be Terrifier 2. The sequel definitely ups the ante when it comes to gore and brutality. We can only imagine how gory the upcoming Terrifier 3 will be.

In a Violent Nature (2024)

In a Violent Nature hasn't even been released in theaters yet, but we're already hearing about how gory and disturbing it is. During the Chicago Critics Film Fest screening of the film, an audience member allegedly vomited while watching it. This makes me eager to know what was so unsettling in the film that caused such a reaction. However, I'm not completely shocked by this news because the horror flick is unrated. This means there will most likely be a high level of violence and excessive gore in it.

The slasher flick centers around an undead killer who is resurrected after a group of teens steal his locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods. Determined to get it back, the vengeful spirit goes on a killing spree, murdering anyone who gets in his way.

Where to watch: U.S. theaters on May 31, 2024 and on Shudder later in the year.

The Evil Dead (1981)

Known for its extreme gore and graphic violence, The Evil Dead follows a group of five college friends who while vacationing in a cabin in the woods, end up unknowingly releasing flesh-possessing demons that begin taking them down one by one and turning them into undead parasitic demonic spirits.

Saw movies (2004-)

Forget about the first movie in the Saw film series because it's not gory at all. However, the other Saw movies are gore-spattered and can trigger feelings of discomfort due to how gory they are. The films center around a serial killer named John "Jigsaw" Kramer and his apprentices as they set up gruesome death traps and deadly games to test their victims will to survive.

10 movies have been released so far with an eleventh movie titled Saw XI currently in the works and set for a Sept. 26, 2025 theatrical release.

The Sadness (2021)

The Sadness is a Taiwanese horror film following a young couple trying to reunite amid a viral outbreak that turns people into bloodthirsty, violent killers. There are so many gory scenes in this movie, as well as excessive violence. It might be hard for some people to watch this film for those very reasons, but if you're a hardcore horror fan who has a high tolerance for violence and gore, you shouldn't have that hard of a time getting through it.
