Given the monumental success of Ryan Murphy's biographical true crime series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, it came as little surprise when Netflix opted to renew the series for two additional seasons. Despite mixed reviews and controversial subject matter, Dahmer has become one of Netflix's most-watched original series of all time, receiving several awards, including an Emmy for star Niecy Nash.
Now, the streamer is looking to replicate that success with the next iteration of the show, this time tackling the complicated story of Lyle and Erik Menendez, the brothers convicted in 1996 for murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menendez. In real life, Erik and Lyle are currently serving life sentences without the chance of parole at the California state prison Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility.
But Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story aims to re-examine the case, one that many people feel the courts may have gotten wrong. The prosecution at the time argued that the brothers had been hoping to inherit the family fortune, but Lyle and Erik have always said the real reason they murdered their parents was due to years of horrific abuse from their parents.
"'Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story' dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?"
The eight-episode series will launch on Thursday, September 19, at 12:00 a.m. PT / 3:00 a.m. ET, with all episodes streaming on the same day. Javier Bardem stars as José, with Chloë Sevigny portraying his on-screen wife Kitty. Nicholas Chavez (Grotesquerie) and Cooper Koch (They/Them) play Lyle and Erik, respectively. Nathan Lane and Ari Graynor also star as Dominick Dunne and Leslie Abramson.
Additional cast members include Leslie Grossman, Paul Adelstein, Jeff Perry, Marlene Forte, Charlie Hall, Dallas Roberts, Jason Butler Horner, Enrique Murciano, Michael Gladis, and more.
