Production has officially started on Yellowjackets season 3: Everything to know
Yellowjackets was a smash hit when it premiered on Showtime back in November 2021. It received critical acclaim and was even nominated for several Emmy Awards. Due to the first season's success, Showtime went ahead and gave the green light for a second season only a month after the first season's premiere. In fact, Showtime had so much faith in the thriller drama series that it ended up renewing it for a third season three months before the second season even premiered on Showtime.
It's been almost a year since the second season last aired, and fans have been patiently waiting for Yellowjackets season 3. Due to the writers and actors strikes, there were production delays on the third season. Fortunately, a deal was eventually reached, and the strikes ended at the end of 2023. The scriptwriting process just needed to be finished before the cameras could start rolling. Now, we've just learned that production has officially commenced, which means we're one step closer to seeing our favorite Yellowjackets back on our screens!
If you’re just as excited as us about Yellowjackets season 3, you must keep reading to learn everything there is to know about it so far.
Filming has started on Yellowjackets season 3
Hip, hip, hooray! The cameras have finally started rolling on Yellowjackets season 3, and we couldn't be more excited. On May 14, 2024, the official Yellowjackets X page announced the good news, along with sharing several behind-the-scenes photos of the set for season 3 and the script for the first episode of the season. You can check out the photos below!
After looking at the Directors Guild of Canada's official production list, which shares some of the Canadian TV productions that are set to start filming soon, we had an inkling that filming would start on May 14. Yellowjackets season 3 was included on the list, with a production timeline of May 14, 2024, to Oct. 24, 2024. If this production timeline is legitimate, then that means filming for the third season would take about five months. Since the site provided an accurate filming start date, it looks like filming might actually wrap up in October of this year. No worries! Once we know for sure when the cameras will stop rolling on the third season, we'll let you know right away.
Yellowjackets season 3 confirmed for a 2025 release
Back in January 2024, Yellowjackets’ executive producers Ashley Lyle, Jonathan Lisco, and Bart Nickerson spoke with Deadline on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards and teased that the third season would be coming "early next year."
With production expected to wrap up in late October 2024, a 2024 release would obviously be thrown out since the episodes would have to go through post-production before being ready for viewing. However, a 2025 release was definitely possible. Now, we have confirmation that the new season will be coming in 2025. Early 2025, to be more specific. This means we could see Yellowjackets season 3 sometime in January, February, March, or April 2025. We'll get back to you with the official premiere date once it's revealed.
Spoilers ahead from Yellowjackets season 2.
How does Yellowjackets season 2 end?
Here's what happens in the season 2 finale:
- In the '90s timeline, the Yellowjackets, including Travis, cut up Javi's body, cook him, and then eat him.
- Adult Misty's boyfriend, Walter, kills Kevyn by poisoning him.
- In the present timeline, Misty, Natalie, Shauna, Taissa, Van, and Lottie prepare for a hunt like they used to do in the wilderness. Since Shauna picked the Queen of Hearts, she's the unlucky person to be hunted. Lottie believes that the darkness from the wilderness has followed them into the present and that the only way to satiate it is by sacrificing someone. But before they can catch Shauna, Callie appears out of nowhere and shoots at Lottie. The hunt stops and then suddenly Lisa appears with a shotgun aiming it at Natalie. To stop Lisa, Misty runs to inject her
- with phenobarbital, but Natalie steps in front of Lisa and sacrifices herself.
- Adult Natalie ends up dying of a drug overdose, and adult Lottie is sent back to a mental hospital.
- After bad cop Matt finds Kevyn's body in the trunk of a car, Walter suddenly appears and gives him two options. He tells him that he could either pin Adam and PD Jessica Roberts' deaths on Kevyn since he's dead or he could pin them on him. Matt chooses to pin the murders on Kevyn, which now clears Shauna and Misty of the murders.
- In the '90s timeline, Natalie becomes the antler queen after Lottie tells her that the wilderness has chosen her to be the group's new leader.
- The last scene of the season 2 finale shows the Yellowjackets quickly evacuating the cabin because it's on fire. They stand outside in the cold and watch as the cabin burns up in flames. Coach Ben is revealed to be the person who set the cabin on fire.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for season 3 at the moment.
