In the words of Sabrina Carpenter, "it's slim pickins" this week when it comes to horror. But that's okay because March is positively bursting at the seams with new shows and movies (The Woman in the Yard, Death of a Unicorn, Opus, Happy Face, and more!). We just have to get through this final week of February until we're home free.
On the positive side, there are still a couple of things worth looking into in the coming days, including the digital release date for Steven Soderbergh's Presence and another scary take on Mickey Mouse. Other than that, now would be a good time to catch up on any 2025 horror movies you've missed. The Monkey and Heart Eyes are still playing in theaters, while Wolf Man and Companion are also out on VOD.
Presence
- Director: Steven Soderbergh
- Writer: David Koepp
- Cast: Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland, and Julia Fox
- Coming to VOD on Tuesday, Feb. 25
Before there was The Monkey, Neon kicked off 2025 with the well-received supernatural thriller Presence from director Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp (Jurassic Park). The film gained notoriety for its unique take on the haunted house genre, creating a story that is told entirely from the point-of-view of the entity through several extensive single takes.
Presence centers on the Payne family who move into a house unaware it is inhabited by a poltergeist. A slow-burn story with family drama and a compelling ghost story, Presence is a reminder of just how gifted Soderbergh is at his craft.
I Heart Willie
- Director: Alejandro G. Alegre
- Writer: David Vaughn
- Cast: Maya Luna, Sergio Rogalto, Daniela Porras, Micho Camacho, and David Vaughn
- In theaters one night only on Wednesday, Feb. 26
Since Disney short film Steamboat Willie officially entered the public domain, there's been a rush to make as many terrifying slasher versions of the iconic character as possible. Terrifier star David Howard Thornton will lead the upcoming Screamboat, but before that there's I Heart Willie.
This unofficial take on Micky Mouse will get one exclusive night in theaters on Wednesday, February 26. It's an origin story for this gruesome murderer, Willie, who enjoys using skin from his victims to create his own suit. When YouTubers Nico and Daniel visit a haunted house plagued by rumors, they have no idea they've been lured into a trap by the most malevolent mouse around.
Unholy Song
- Writer/Director: Arthur G. Knight
- Cast: Jessica K. Chaves, Christopher Orozco, Sean Gestl, Eric Parkinson, and Quint Gabriel
- In select theaters on Friday, Feb. 28
A landlord and his renters must confront something terrifying when they unwittingly release an evil witch from a cursed tape. The Unholy Song has been teased as a riveting possession film, inspired by a biblical exorcism, specifically the story of Jesus Chris exorcising a demon out of a man and into his swine. It won the Best Thriller award at the 2024 LA Punk Film Festival.
