Shudder is ready to start off 2025 with a scream with its January schedule. We have a lot to look forward to this month, including a home invasion staple, a controversial French film and the remake of Last Shift.
January 1:
The Others – Released in 2001, this Nicole Kidman film was a huge box office success. Set In 1945 at the end of World War II, it’s a spooky ghostly tale about a woman living in an old family mansion with her two children. Because they are photosensitive, she keeps everything dark, which only adds to the eerie atmosphere.
The Wolf Man – Wealthy Larry Talbot returns to his family home in Wales after his brother’s death. After falling in love with a woman who works at an antique shop, he buys a cane adorned with a silver wolf’s head, and shortly thereafter encounters a werewolf.
Irreversible: The Straight Cut – “This reconfigured and now chronological version allows audiences to see the events of the film unfold in order, providing pivotal new context.” The original version of this extremely violent film also premieres on January 1. The original is presented in reverse order.
Malum – In this remake of 2014’s Last Shift, a police officer on her first assignment is assigned the last shift at a police station in the process of shutting down. Supernatural events start to happen, and may be due to some cult suicides that occurred years earlier. *Though I haven’t yet seen Malum, Last Shift is one of a small handful of films I recommend to people who are looking for a “truly scary” movie experience.
Mind Body Spirit – Anya is a wannabe yoga influencer, who finds a small hidden room in her grandmother’s apartment. Because of the items in the space, she assumes that dear old grandma was a healer of some sort.
Invoking Yell – This 2023 Chilean found footage film tells the story of three young women who go out into the woods to create a demo for their black metal band.
Beaten to Death – In this aptly titled film, Jack is struggling to survive as he battles nature and humans, getting more and more beat up as he goes along.
The Thing – A wintry horror film if there ever was one, The Thing features Kurt Russell as the leader of a group of researchers in Antarctica. As the men are plagued by a shape-shifting creature that assumes the identity of its host, they begin to turn on one another.
January 6:
Them (Ils) – In this French-Romanian film, a couple living in a large home in the country are menaced by a group of home invaders.
The Righteous – “A burdened man feels the wrath of a vengeful God after he and his wife are visited by a mysterious stranger.”
Two Witches – A young pregnant woman believes she has been cursed by a witch, and another hopes to inherit her grandmother’s powers so she can indulge her violent tendencies.
January 10:
Get Away (Shudder Original) – A family takes a vacation to a remote Swedish island, discovering upon arrival that there is a festival about to happen. Despite the not-so-friendly natives and the dark rituals going on, they try to enjoy themselves, but discover there is a serial killer on the island.
January 13:
Curtains – In this 1983 Canadian slasher, six actresses auditioning for a role in a film become the targets of a masked murderer.
The Kindred – When a geneticist’s mother dies, he discovers he has a brother he never knew about – but this brother isn’t human.
Black Circle – “The lives of two sisters change dramatically, since they were hypnotized by a mystical vinyl record from the 1970s.”
The Oracle – A woman is contacted by a vengeful spirit, hoping she will help get revenge for its death.
Crocodile – I mean…I think the title tells you what this one is about. Eight students go on spring break utilizing a houseboat. I guess they encounter a vicious croc.
January 14:
Red Rooms – Kelly-Anne is obsessed with a serial killer, and attends his trial every day. She eventually becomes friends with another serial killer groupie, but has trouble keeping her mental health in check.
January 24:
Grafted (Shudder Original) – Wei is a shy Chinese student studying medical research at a university in New Zealand. Hindered by a birthmark on her face, Wei is shunned, but decides to experiment with a skin grafting procedure that she hopes will remove her birthmark.
January 27:
The Vourdalak – “Lost in a hostile forest, the Marquis d'Urfé, a noble emissary of the King of France, finds refuge in the home of a strange family.”
January 31:
Dark Match (Shudder Original) – A small wrestling company thinks they have hit paydirt when they are offered a very well-paying gig in the middle of nowhere. But they discover that the community there is overseen by a dangerous cult leader, and this particular fight is expected to be a literal fight to the death.
