Shudder and RLJE Films have dropped a trailer for an original film that will premiere in theaters this month. Bloody Axe Wound will likely be available to stream on Shudder in the next month or two, given that’s what happened with Late Night With the Devil and In a Violent Nature.
Bloody Axe Wound stars Sari Arambulo (The L Word: Generation Q), Molly Brown (Dexter: Original Sin), Eddie Leavy (The Other Two), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) and Billy Burke (Outbreak), with Hilary Burton Morgan (The Walking Dead) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan producing for Mischief Farm.
Of course, horror fans are definitely familiar with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played that villain everyone loved to hate, Negan, on The Walking Dead. Hilary Burton Morgan is his wife, and she appeared on The Walking Dead as Negan’s wife Lucille, who he named his barbed wire wrapped baseball bat after – yep, the same bat he used to kill Glenn and Abraham in one of the most nerve-wracking episodes of television EVER. I think that episode left me forever traumatized.
The trailer and description for Bloody Axe Wound leave plenty of room for speculation as far as the plotline is concerned. And I have to say, that creepy wolf mask featured in the trailer made me immediately think about Shudder’s new original series The Creep Tapes. Am I wrong, or does it look very similar?
As far as I can tell by the synopsis included in the press release, here is the basic storyline for Bloody Axe Wound: Teenager Abbie Bladecut is expected to keep up her family’s bloody traditions, but is sidetracked by her first crush. Her father, Roger, has made a living (and a brutal legacy) by filming real-life murders in the town of Clover Falls and selling the tapes to people who are eager to watch them, but Abbie isn’t sure if she wants to continue on the same path.
Judging by the first look images and the trailer, it appears Bloody Axe Wound has definitely earned the word “bloody” in its title. But it’s described as a horror comedy, and the trailer reflects that as well. As films such as Shaun of the Dead, Werewolves Within, Deadstream and Scare Me have proven, horror comedies work best when they blend the funny stuff with genuinely scary events. So, looking at the trailer, it seems that Bloody Axe Wound may be a good representation for the horror comedy sub-genre.
Bloody Axe Wound will debut in select theatres on December 27.
