Insidious: The Red Door was supposed to be the last chapter in the mega-successful Insidious franchise, at least for several years. But that is no longer the case.
Not long after The Red Door hit theaters and became the highest-grossing film in the franchise, Blumhouse announced a spinoff film titled Thread: An Insidious Film. That movie no longer has a confirmed release date, but during CinemaCon 2025, Sony announced yet another Insidious is in development, this one tentatively titled Insidious 6, until we learn more.
Insidious 6 will be released on August 21, 2026. While Sony shared the date and reportedly revealed that this movie differs from Thread, the production company did not share any plot details or casting news about the newly announced project.
The Red Door wrapped up the main storylines for the Lambert family, with Ty Simpkins, Patrick Wilson, and Rose Byrne all returning. Since their story has finished, Insidious 6 will likely introduce new characters as they journey into The Further. Lin Shaye is likely to return as Elise Rainier in both Insidious movies, as she's been in all of them thus far.
Sony hasn't shared much information about Thread, although we know that Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani have been cast. Jeremy Slater will write and direct the spinoff.
However, with Insidious 6 officially in the works and set to release theatrically in a little more than a year, Thread will probably be pushed aside. As far as we know, production hasn't even started on the spinoff despite the film being announced in 2023.
Sony will undoubtedly focus on the sixth main Insidious film before setting its sights on a spinoff, especially considering how successful The Red Door was at the box office.
Insidious is just one of several highly anticipated horror movies from Sony, with I Know What You Did Last Summer and 28 Years Later releasing this year.
